Ubisoft’s ‘Alterra’ Wants To Be The Next Animal Crossing

Ubisoft's 'Alterra' Wants To Be The Next Animal Crossing

As a seasoned gamer and long-time fan of both Animal Crossing and Minecraft, I can hardly contain my excitement for Ubisoft’s upcoming project, Alterra. The fusion of these two beloved franchises promises an immersive experience that will undoubtedly resonate with countless players like myself.

At the moment, Ubisoft is working on a game that shares some similarities with Nintendo’s widely-loved social simulator titled “Animal Crossing”, which they have dubbed “Alterra”.

An exclusive report by Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming reveals all the details.

Over the past 18 months, Alterra has been working to blend the social simulation and community features of Animal Crossing with Minecraft’s construction mechanics. The game will offer players a home island populated with interactive NPC characters called Matterlings. According to my sources, players will have the freedom to explore other worlds, each featuring various biomes, Matterlings, enemies, resources, and additional elements. Interaction with other players on these islands is also possible.

As a devoted enthusiast, I can’t help but excitedly share that this is where Minecraft-inspired creativity unfolds. Players are given the freedom to construct whatever their hearts desire, using resources they collect. For instance, if you’re aiming for a frosty ambiance reminiscent of Donkey Kong Country, you might find yourself in the ice world. Conversely, if you wish to celebrate the upcoming Universal Studio Japan’s Super Nintendo World with its jungle theme, a journey to a lush, verdant world would be your destination.

Henderson’s tale doesn’t provide further instances of unique biomes beyond the icy planet. Nonetheless, it seems that game-like features such as diverse landscapes and aesthetics will likely play a significant role.

In terms of their appearance, it’s said that the Matterlings will draw inspiration from Funk Pop styles. Their unique look will include oversized heads reminiscent of mythical beasts, blended with characteristics of actual animals.

Who at Ubisoft Is Leading Development on Alterra?

At Ubisoft Montreal, the progress of Alterra is being overseen. Patrick Redding, who is recognized for his role as Creative Director in Gotham Knights, serves as Alterra’s Creative Director. According to his LinkedIn profile, he has been working on a secret project since June 2023. It’s speculated that this mystery project could very well be Alterra.

Fabien Lhéraud, who has spent a significant amount of time at Ubisoft, serves as the game’s Lead Producer. According to his LinkedIn profile, he’s been working on an undisclosed project for four years now. Given that the title is classified as a “next-generation” release, it might be some time before Alterra makes its debut in public view.

Indeed, there were other games influenced by a Nintendo franchise that gained attention this year besides the one we’ve been discussing. For instance, the game Palworld garnered notoriety for merging aspects of open-world survival games with creature designs remarkably like those found in the Pokemon series.
