As a long-time admirer of the rich and captivating world of manga, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement upon witnessing the release of the new trailer for “The Rose of Versailles” movie. This masterpiece from Riyoko Ikeda has been an integral part of my manga journey since its inception in the 1970s, and it’s truly heartwarming to see its legacy continue to inspire creators even today.
A fresh movie trailer for “The Rose of Versailles” has been unveiled in Japan. Tickets are currently available for purchase in Japan, however, a global release hasn’t been confirmed yet. It’s possible that it could become accessible through streaming platforms like Crunchyroll.
The famous manga titled “The Rose of Versailles,” or alternatively called “Lady Oscar,” was initially serialized from 1972 to 1973, and it consists of ten collected volumes. In the following year, its creator, Riyoko Ikeda, continued the story with a spin-off titled “The Rose of Versailles Gaiden,” which was compiled into two separate volumes.
This upcoming PV unveils the era before the French Revolution, centering around Marie Antoinette and a unique manga character named Oscar François de Jarjayes. Additionally, you’ll find other characters like André Grandier in it. The theme song, titled “Versailles/Berusaiyu“, is also featured. Mark your calendars, as the movie is set to debut on January 31, 2025. Here’s a sneak peek:
The Impact of The Rose of Versailles
New chapters were released in the 2010s
Initially, Riyoko Ikeda planned to create a tale centered around Marie Antoinette. However, the introduction of the fictional character, Oscar, in the manga sparked an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from readers. This shift in reception encouraged Ikeda to concentrate more on developing Oscar’s storyline to maintain serialization. Regrettably, after Oscar’s demise, she was compelled to wrap up the narrative sooner than anticipated.
Although the series didn’t conclude according to her initial plans, “The Rose of Versailles” became incredibly popular and left a significant mark on the manga industry, particularly influencing the shōjo genre. Notable works like “Revolutionary Girl Utena” appear to be influenced by Ikeda’s manga. However, the influence wasn’t confined solely to girls’ manga. Characters from other well-known series, such as Napoléon Valois from “Ring ni Kakero” and Aphrodite from “Saint Seiya”, are reminiscent of Lady Oscar.
In the following decades, Ikeda managed to publish additional installments of her work, addressing topics she couldn’t in the 70s. This resurgence appeared in Margaret magazine from 2012 to 2018 and was ultimately collected into four volumes.
The classic “The Rose of Versailles” was transformed into an animated series, broadcast from 1979 to 1980. Tadao Nagahama (known for “Combattler V”) and Osamu Dezaki (renowned for “Tomorrow’s Joe”) served as the directors, while Shingo Araki oversaw the character designs. Currently, Discotek Media holds the rights to distribute this anime in the United States.
The upcoming film serves as a tribute for the show’s 50th anniversary, having been created by studio MAPPA. Ai Yoshimura, known for “Yarichin Bitch Club,” will be directing, while Tomoko Konparu, who previously worked on “Nodame Cantabile,” is responsible for the scripts.
Although there’s no confirmation about an international release for the new film, the original “The Rose of Versailles” manga is currently available in English thanks to Udon Entertainment. Meanwhile, the classic anime has been licensed by Discotek Media.
