The PlayStation 2 Has Sold Over 160 Million Units

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Sony’s PlayStation 2 (PS2) has been nothing short of a revolution in the gaming industry. Having grown up during its heyday, I can vividly remember the excitement and anticipation surrounding each new release on the PS2. The console’s ability to play DVDs was truly groundbreaking, making it more than just a gaming device but an all-in-one entertainment system.

On Tuesday, Sony unveiled a special 30th Anniversary site dedicated to the PlayStation. This website takes a trip down memory lane, showcasing the evolution of the console from the original PlayStation to the latest PlayStation 5 (PS5). Additionally, it officially revealed an upgrade in sales figures for the best-selling video game console ever, the PlayStation 2 (PS2).

Based on Sony’s latest report, more than 160 million PlayStation 2 (PS2) units have been sold worldwide since it debuted in 2000. Earlier estimates suggested that around 158.3 million consoles had been sold previously.

The sales include original versions of the console as well us various models, including the PS2 Slim that launched in 2004.

The PlayStation 2 leads as the top-selling console of all time with approximately 160 million units, while the Nintendo Switch follows closely behind, having sold around 146 million units. Including handheld systems in the count, the PlayStation 2 is only six million units ahead of the staggering 154.02 million units the Nintendo DS achieved during its lifetime.

The popularity of the system stemmed not just from its games, but also its capability to play DVDs, which was quite appealing during a period when DVDs were widely used for buying movies and TV shows. It’s no surprise that this multi-purpose system proved to be a successful choice.

To date, Sony’s latest console, the PlayStation 5, has surpassed 65 million sales since its release approximately four years ago, according to Sony’s report.
