As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of tabletop RPG experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming Dragon Anthology for Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) has the potential to be truly epic, but it would be a colossal oversight if it fails to include Gem Dragons.
2021 looks set to be a momentous year for Dungeons & Dragons, with an impressive lineup of books on the horizon. Yet, amidst all these exciting developments, it’s crucial not to overlook one expansion: the enigmatic Gem Dragons in this new adventure landscape.
During August’s D&D Direct, several new D&D books were unveiled for the year 2025. Among these announcements, a revised Monster Manual, which will conclude the 2024 core rules, is scheduled for release. Furthermore, 2025 will introduce a fresh starter set inspired by the timeless Keep on the Borderlands adventure. Additionally, two books focusing on The Forgotten Realms are expected. One of these books will serve as a player’s guide to this world, while another rulebook is planned for Dungeon Masters, offering expanded details about various locations within the realm.
2025’s Dragon Anthology Shouldn’t Ignore Fizban’s Treasury Of Dragons
One of the biggest announcements that came from this series of book reveals is D&D‘s upcoming ‘Dragon Anthology’. Poised for summer 2025, this book will contain a number of adventures—each geared for a different player level. Each adventure will be focused around a dragon, with the overall goal being to help players experience the quintessential fantasy of D&D, fighting those eponymous dragons. Though details around this book are scarce, the current messaging around it focuses on both Metallic and Chromatic dragons. However, there’s a third type of dragon, Gem dragons, that WOTC shouldn’t wait to reintroduce.
Gem Dragons Can’t Keep Going Unused
In 2021, gem dragons were brought back into Dungeons & Dragons with Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons, even though some versions appeared in a Dragon magazine issue from 1986, six years after the game began. Despite their deep roots in the game’s early history, they are frequently underestimated, and it’s not difficult to understand why. Unlike Chromatic dragons that symbolize evil or Metallic dragons representing good, Gem dragons are neutral. This lack of alignment involvement makes them less prominent in Dungeons & Dragons’ dramatic events, and their psychic abilities don’t aid this perception. Although psychic powers are a significant appeal for many fans when it comes to these creatures, the game has been moving away from such powers, particularly since the Mystic class failed to gain traction.
Though there’s a lot running against them, Gem dragons still deserve a place in D&D‘s Dragon Anthology. With D&D taking on the anthology format once more, there’s more than a little ground for experimentation—which would be perfect for fleshing out Gem dragons. Gem dragons got themselves some big fact files in Fizban ‘s, but much of their lore revolves around justifying their lack of presence in other adventures. If the upcoming anthology can turn the isolationist nature of these dragons into a narrative arc, such as an adventure that has players try to convince an apathetic Gem dragon to help them, it could serve as a tool to help DMs use them in adventures.
Gem Dragons Should Be Made To Fit More In The World
In a refreshing departure from tradition, D&D 2024 might break the pattern of introducing novel concepts only to abandon them. Unlike previous editions, where adventure modules and setting guides often overlook the fresh creatures, spells, and character races presented in supplementary books, D&D 2024 could indicate a shift by incorporating core elements from expanded material into its main storyline, as demonstrated by the promotion of Aasimar and Goliaths to core species.
The book “Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons” introduced significant concepts, with the updated version of Dragonborn being particularly influential for the revision in “D&D 2024.” However, many of its ideas have been overlooked in other publications, and Gem dragons are scarcely used compared to their counterparts. Including them in the “Dragon Anthology” could breathe new life into them, and make the worlds of “D&D” feel more unified.
