He’s okay with developers using AI, but only if it doesn’t negatively impact the quality of the game. With more and more game studios starting to use AI, it’s natural that the person leading PUBG Battlegrounds would offer their perspective on the topic.
Okay, so I’ve been following the news about Crimson Desert, and it’s kinda wild. Apparently, the developers, Pearl Abyss, used AI to create some stuff for the game, but they said it wasn’t supposed to make it into the final version. They’re now working to remove those AI-generated assets, but it’s not just them – a lot of studios are quietly using AI during development. Honestly, gamers are pretty upset about it, but with the economy being so unpredictable and publishers looking to save money, I don’t see this AI thing going away anytime soon. It seems like it’s here to stay, whether we like it or not.
How PUBG Studios Views AI
Jang shared his thoughts with IGN, explaining that he’s keeping a close eye on the use of AI in game development. Personally, as a player, he doesn’t mind if AI is used to create art, as long as the gameplay is enjoyable. He noted his perspective might differ from those working as developers or publishers, and that he’s still learning about the possibilities. Regarding PUBG Battlegrounds, Jang said the studio aims to use AI to create new and engaging experiences for players. They see AI as a tool to help with routine tasks, rather than a core component of gameplay—at least for the time being.
Krafton, the company behind PUBG: Battlegrounds, is taking a different approach. As Simon Cardy noted, they’ve declared themselves an “AI-first” company and even bought out some employee contracts to downsize. This comes at a difficult time, as Krafton is dealing with legal issues stemming from a disagreement with the team behind Subnautica 2, as well as pushback from players who are wary of AI integration.
Many gamers are understandably worried about the increasing use of AI in games. It’s natural to want human creativity and effort in the games we play. Currently, AI-generated content isn’t flawless – you often see strange errors like distorted hands or oddly shaped buildings, which can detract from the experience for detail-oriented players. Some game developers, like Digital Extremes (the creators of Warframe), are actively choosing not to use AI as a result.
