Taeseok Jang, head of PUBG: Battlegrounds, recently shared his thoughts on the increasing popularity of ARC Raiders and believes the extraction shooter genre has a lot of potential. PUBG, which first came out in 2017, quickly became a leading battle royale game. The core idea is straightforward: 100 players parachute onto an island and battle until only one remains, earning the famous “chicken dinner” victory message. Despite strong competition from games like Apex Legends and Fortnite, PUBG continues to have a dedicated and thriving community.
The popular game PUBG is expanding beyond its well-known battle royale format. Its creator, Krafton, recently announced PUBG: Black Budget, a new first-person shooter focused on intense, unpredictable gameplay and surviving challenging situations. While many PUBG fans are excited about this new direction, some on Reddit and Twitter have questioned whether focusing on spin-off games will take resources away from the original. However, the team at PUBG Studios is confident that this type of extraction shooter game has a bright future and isn’t just a passing fad.
PUBG Boss Talks About ARC Raiders and Extraction Shooters
PUBG Studios’ head, Taeseok Jang, recently told IGN he thinks extraction shooters could become even more popular than battle royale games. That’s why his studio is heavily invested in their new game, Black Budget. He admitted that creating a fun and balanced extraction shooter is challenging – more complex than typical shooters – but the positive reception to ARC Raiders shows him the genre has a bright future if developers get it right.
Extraction shooters have always been a bit of a mixed bag for gamers, but ARC Raiders really changed things up. Since launching in late 2025, it’s sold over 12 million copies and consistently ranks among the most played games on Steam. People love it because it’s easy to pick up and play, but offers a fresh experience with a good balance between cooperative and competitive gameplay, appealing to many different types of players. ARC Raiders felt like a welcome change in a gaming world saturated with hero shooters and battle royales, which explains why PUBG is now trying its hand at this type of game with Black Budget.
Look, as a PUBG player, I think the studio really needs to be careful with what they do next. Remember PUBG: Blindspot? That didn’t go over well at all. It was a 5v5 tactical shooter, kind of top-down, where you picked agents and played in squads. It launched on Steam, but people quickly started leaving negative reviews because of clunky controls, constant server problems, and terrible matchmaking. Eventually, the devs had to pull the plug on it – they shut it down on March 30, 2026. They definitely need to learn from that experience.

While the recent spin-off game wasn’t very successful, the original PUBG is still incredibly popular. It just received a new co-op mode and a fun crossover with Stellar Blade. Players are excited to see what the developers, Krafton, will do next with this leading battle royale game.
