Marathon’s Development Reportedly Cost Over $200 Million

Recent estimates suggest the development of Marathon cost over $200 million, and possibly even more. After a difficult and lengthy development process, Bungie’s new shooter game launched just over a month ago. While initial reception has been positive, it hasn’t been outstanding, which might be disappointing given the game’s huge development costs.

The development of the latest game from the Sony-owned studio was difficult. Initial player feedback was very negative, leading Bungie to postpone the game, titled Marathon, for over five months to improve it. The studio also faced a controversy involving AI-generated art and reports of low employee morale. Despite these challenges, Marathon was eventually released to generally positive reviews, but not without significant effort and cost.

Marathon’s Budget is “Likely” More than $250 Million

Forbes’ Paul Tassi reports that developing the game Marathon cost over $200 million, and the total could be even higher – potentially exceeding $250 million. It’s not certain if this figure includes all expenses or just development costs, but if it’s only development, Marathon ranks among the 10 most expensive games ever created. While marketing costs aren’t included, a budget of over $200 million is remarkably high. Importantly, this doesn’t cover any work done after the game’s release. With ongoing updates and new content planned, Marathon‘s overall costs could become extremely high over time as Bungie continues to support the game.

Tassi isn’t sure whether the $200 to $250 million figure represents the original budget or the final cost after Marathon‘s release was pushed back. Regardless, the amount is notable considering Bungie ultimately priced the base game at $40, lower than the typical $70 for major game releases. This lower price likely boosted sales, particularly when competing with games like ARC Raiders. It’s also important to remember that Marathon includes microtransactions, which, despite being controversial, provide additional income to offset the game’s high development costs.

A recent Forbes report looked at how the game Marathon has performed since its launch. While initial reviews were good and a significant number of players – 22% on Steam – have invested over 50 hours, it hasn’t been a complete success. The game has lost 59% of its players on Steam, which is particularly concerning since PC is where most of Marathon’s players (70%) are. Even the release of the new Cryo Archive map didn’t significantly boost player numbers, only causing a small increase similar to a typical weekend rise.

Although it faced tough competition, Marathon didn’t immediately break into Steam’s top 10 most-played games. However, the game still has potential. While player numbers aren’t as high as Bungie hoped, a dedicated fanbase seems to be sticking with it after overcoming the initial challenges. Bungie has committed to supporting Marathon for years to come with ongoing improvements, which could ultimately justify the game’s significant development costs. At the very least, Marathon is still active a month after launch, which is more than can be said for Concord.
