In the most recent edition of PlayStation’s podcast, Shuhei Yoshida, who heads SIE’s indie sector, reminisced about his 31-year journey with Sony’s renowned gaming empire. A pioneer in the gaming industry, Yoshida is one of the founding members of the original PlayStation team established in 1993. During this conversation, he recounted his collaborative efforts with former SIE CEO Ken Kutaragi, often referred to as the Playstation’s father figure. Moreover, Yoshida revealed a significant career decision: his intention to depart from Sony’s gaming division within the upcoming months.

In episode 502 of the Official PlayStation Podcast, it was disclosed that Shuhei Yoshida plans to depart from SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) on January 15, 2025. This executive, who has been contemplating his departure from Sony for quite some time now, feels that the moment is right for him to make a change. During an interview with Sid Shuman, SIE’s Senior Director for Content Communications, Yoshida expressed satisfaction with the current state of PlayStation and acknowledged that it is already being expertly managed. Moreover, he confessed his admiration for the games being released on the PS5 as well as Sony’s latest gaming console itself.

In his chat with Shuman, Yoshida spotlighted two PlayStation 5 games that have been consuming his recent free time. One of these was Slitterhead, a distinctive action-horror game developed by Bokeh Game Studio from Japan. This studio is led by Keiichiro Toyama, who’s known for creating the Gravity Rush, Silent Hill, and Siren series. Yoshida commended the atmospheric setting and intriguing characters of Slitterhead, likening its gameplay to that of a Soulslike title. As per Yoshida, battling bosses in Slitterhead is enjoyable because players often have the chance to deliver a decisive blow on them, even when playing as an elderly character.

Another game title mentioned was “2D platformer and metroidvania” titled “Nine Sols,” developed by Taiwanese indie studio Red Candle Games. Yoshida referred to “Nine Sols” as a 2D adaptation of FromSoftware’s “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice,” featuring combat mechanics with parries and counters. The game, as the head of SIE indie initiatives stated, combines elements of science fiction and Chinese folklore, earning comparisons to the highly-praised beat ’em up game “Sifu.” According to Yoshida, mastering parries and counters in “Nine Sols” can result in a truly satisfying player experience.

According to Yoshida, he’s planning to attend multiple gatherings before departing from SIE. These include The Game Awards 2024 in December and the Taipei Game Show in January 2025. Besides these commitments, Yoshida, a long-time PlayStation figurehead, mentioned that he currently has no further arrangements and will probably spend his spare time as he wishes.
