As someone who’s spent countless hours navigating through these pixelated landscapes, I must say that this block puzzle was quite the challenge! But fear not, dear reader, for I have braved the icy terrains and emerged victorious.
Moving block puzzles, whether you’re gliding on ice like a Pokémon trainer or maneuvering boulders, are a classic feature in Japanese Role-Playing Games, and this game is no different!

On your adventure to Slippenglide Island, you’ll encounter a chilly cavern with a puzzling challenge that requires you to leap and strike in order to progress. Luckily, the lighthouse at the end of this obstacle course is within reach!
Once you solve the puzzle, you will successfully connect Slippenglide Island, the Uni-Tree, and the remainder of Concordia.
Navigating the Puzzle
To move forward through the cavern, you need to dislodge three massive chunks of ice into the water. This creates a path for the Bros. to ascend onto a shelf, allowing them to eventually scale up and find their way out of the cave.
For the majority of the game, you’ll be managing the moving platforms using Luigi’s logic. Simply press the ‘L’ key to keep Luigi standing near the control button, and press the ‘Y’ key for him to use his hammer on it.
Three steps are allowed on those icy platforms before they may crack and collapse, forcing you to return to the start.
Keep an eye out for dangerous pits on the floor while rearranging blocks. These pits instantly shatter any ice block that falls into them. Luckily, another block will materialize at ground level, saving you from having to navigate the platforms again.
Along the way there are four Question Blocks to grab. Don’t leave ’em behind!

The First Block
This puzzle’s first block is easy-peasy. When you enter the cave, the block is sitting dead ahead.
Position yourself to the right side of the block, then press the ‘X’ button to strike it with your hammer. The block will glide to the left and fall into the water.
This block not just initiates the construction of your bridge, but it also grants entry to the remaining parts of the puzzle. Scale the ledge at the spot where the block was located, then hit ‘L’ once Luigi begins to glow green.
The Second Block
The challenge begins here! To get to the second block, you’ll have to leap over the icy platforms towards a yellow platform instead.
After boarding, press ‘Y’ and Luigi will transport you to another group of icy platforms. Jump your way over to the secure zone, then hit the column to make it collapse and reach the ground level.
While you’re already here, why not grab the two Question Blocks located at the northwest corner? This way, you won’t have to retrace your steps later.
Hop down to the ground, then hammer the block in the following directions:
- South
- West
- North
- West
- South
Every time you hit it, the ice block will glide across the surface until it hits the ground or terrain. The final blow will propel it fully to the lower level.
As soon as the block drops, leap down and strike it into the water. Even though you can’t grab the ledge just yet, an Exclamation Block is now accessible for you to hit!
The Last Block
As I smash the exclamation mark, new footholds magically materialize before my eyes! I scramble to grab hold and ascend, making my way towards the spot where the second icy block previously stood, now aiming for those freshly-spawned platforms.
As a gamer, I’ve got some news: the latest yellow platform you see isn’t in Luigi’s control. Remember to time your leap just right when you reach it. Give it a ride, then smash that ice block straight down on the ground!
Positioning this block can be a bit challenging, however, the initial hammering sequence is quite straightforward.

To proceed southward, you should move the block carefully; ensure it stops just shy of the dangerous spike pit. Press the Y key to manipulate the yellow sliding barriers and halt the ice block’s progression.
Once the gate is blocking the ice block’s path, you can hit the next hammer sequence:
- East
- North
In this case, you’ll want to adjust the block so it’s situated to the west of a stationary yellow gate. However, during its movement, you’ll need to halt the block’s progress. The immovable position of the yellow gate won’t be enough to stop the block on its own.
Once prepared, nudge the eastern ice block and press ‘Y’ to halt its movement prematurely. If timed correctly, the block should be positioned at the finish line.
Drive it toward the north, then join Luigi for a watery smash. Ascend the cliff, and depart from the cavern to set foot on Slippenglide Island’s lighthouse!
