Mario Kart World Gets New Update for April 2026

An update is now available for Mario Kart World on the Nintendo Switch 2, fixing a number of problems players reported. The game launched with the system last June, and was available on its own or as part of a package. It’s been a big hit for Nintendo, selling over 14 million copies.

The Mario Kart series has been a key part of Nintendo gaming since the original Super Mario Kart came out in 1992. It’s become incredibly popular, especially with the Nintendo Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the Switch’s best-selling game so far, selling over 70 million copies since 2017. Nintendo continues to innovate with the series, as seen in Mario Kart World, which features a connected online world, a new mode called Knockout Tour, and other exciting additions.

Mario Kart World’s New Update

Okay, so Mario Kart World just got updated to version 1.6.1 on my Nintendo Switch 2! Honestly, since they added that big new mode last month, I wasn’t expecting a huge update this time. Turns out, it’s mostly just bug fixes, which is totally fine by me. They fixed a problem where you wouldn’t always get your speed boost when you earned it, and another one where the game would crash if you switched from TV mode to handheld or tabletop during a multiplayer race with friends – especially if there were three or more of us playing! Sounds like pretty niche issues, so I probably didn’t even notice them happening, but it’s good to know the developers are still working on making the game even better.

Nintendo Switch owners eager for new characters and courses in Mario Kart World are still waiting. While rumors suggested King K. Rool and Void Kong would be added after the Donkey Kong Bananza release, that hasn’t happened, leading fans to wonder what Nintendo has planned. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe received a large amount of downloadable content, but the Booster Course Pass wasn’t released until years after the original game, so players are hoping the next update arrives much sooner.

As a big Nintendo fan, I’ve been thinking about why we haven’t seen a ton of Mario news lately. It seems like Nintendo might be spacing things out. We just got the update for Super Mario Bros. Wonder last month, and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is coming in May. Remember how sales jumped after the first Super Mario Bros. Movie? Both of those games could grab the attention of people who loved the new Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters. Plus, if they’re planning more content for Mario Kart World, it would be smart to release it when there aren’t so many other Mario games competing for our attention!

Gamers are really looking forward to the next Nintendo Direct. It’s expected to reveal more details about Nintendo’s plans for the Switch 2 in late 2026, including any new games or downloadable content. It’s been a while since the last presentation, and Nintendo hasn’t announced when the next one will be. However, Nintendo often holds these presentations in June, so many fans are expecting one around that time this year.
