The Level-5 Craftsmanship livestream and a new trailer on April 10, 2026 provided new information on the highly-anticipated Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, revealing new features, story details, voice cast members, and perhaps most interestingly, that it will be a simultaneous worldwide release not just on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 but on PlayStation 5 and Steam. Between 2007 and 2013, the Professor Layton series released six mainline games and an anime movie, chronicling the adventures of Professor Hershel Layton and his assistant Luke Triton as they solved mysteries. After an attempt at a revival with a different cast in Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy in 2017 failed, sending the series into another hiatus, fans were very excited to see the good professor back when Professor Layton and the New World of Steam was announced in a 2023 Nintendo Direct.
The Professor Layton series is beloved for its clever puzzles and charming point-and-click exploration, often praised for its beautiful art style reminiscent of Studio Ghibli films. New World of Steam continues this tradition with a wealth of puzzles, now enhanced by modern cel-shaded 3D graphics. For the first time since Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, players will once again join Layton and Luke as they team up to solve a mystery in the American town of Steam Bison – marking the duo’s first adventure together in 13 years.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam Trailer Confirms New Features and Multiplatform Release
The latest trailer for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam offers a deeper look into the game’s story and showcases some of its puzzles. It also confirms the game will be available on PlayStation 5, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 1 and 2. This marks the first time a main Professor Layton game – aside from Mystery Journey, which is a bit different – will be released on Sony or PC, as all previous mainline titles have been exclusive to Nintendo platforms.

In fact, New World of Steam will have more puzzles than any previous Professor Layton game. These puzzles are being created by QuizKnock, a popular Japanese quiz company and YouTube channel.
The latest Professor Layton game, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, looks to be a visually impressive return for the beloved detective, staying true to Level-5’s high presentation standards. They’re pulling out all the stops, bringing in renowned composer Joe Hisaishi (known for his work on Studio Ghibli films) and vocalist Lilas Ikuta of Yoasobi (who has performed theme songs for popular anime like Oshi no Ko and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End) to create the game’s theme song. However, some fans are concerned that the switch to fully 3D cutscenes means the series’ charming 2D animation style will no longer be featured.

Currently, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is scheduled to release sometime in late 2026, with a specific date still to be announced. However, with it already being April, an official release date should be revealed soon, allowing fans to enjoy a new puzzle adventure with Professor Layton. It’s also great news for international fans, especially considering Level-5 scaled back its US presence in 2020 and some games, like Yo-Kai Watch 4, weren’t released outside of Japan. This new Layton game will be released worldwide at the same time, showing a renewed commitment to a global audience.
