This spine-tingling collection, produced by Toei Animation, weaves together three distinct narratives. Firstly, there’s the Yotsuya Ghost Story, directed by Tetsuo Imazawa and inspired by a renowned Japanese theater play. Secondly, we have The Goddess of the Dark Tower, directed by Kouzou Nagayama, also based on a theater play. Lastly, but certainly not least, there’s the original story by Kenji Nakamura and Michiko Yokote, Goblin Cat, brought to life by Nakamura himself.
In 2007, the anime titled “Mononoke” premiered in Japan, helmed by director Kenji Nakamura. This production, however, was not a Toei-produced work, marking a departure from the norm within the franchise. While co-creator Yokote was heavily involved in the scriptwriting process, sharing this responsibility with Chiaki J. Konaka, Ikuko Takahashi, and Manabu Ishikawa, she did not receive writing credit for the movie.
The story is a collection of chapters with different adventures in each one. It follows the main character, who is simply known as “Medicine Seller” (thus, nameless) and features supernatural beings and phenomenons, taking place around the 19th century. The Phantom in the Rain movie is the first of a trilogy: the second movie (Mononoke Second Chapter: Hinezumi) is slated for March 14, 2025, in Japan, and the third one’s title and date are still to be announced.
