Monster High: Skultimate Secrets Lets Players Really Explore a Mattel World

As a long-time fan of Monster High, it’s safe to say that Outright Games has truly outdone themselves with “Monster High: Skultimate Secrets“. This game is not just another licensed title; it’s a love letter to the series, meticulously crafted to deliver an authentic experience that adds depth to the already rich Monster High lore.

Games based on licenses can sometimes be hit or miss, but one that has put a lot of effort into portraying its broader universe consistently and enriching the existing storyline is the newly launched platformer, Monster High: Skultimate Secrets. This fresh offering gives players an authentic glimpse into Mattel’s world.

In an interview with Game Rant, Destinee Cleveland (narrative designer) and Miguel Ortiz de Urbina Díaz (associate producer) shared their experiences collaborating with Mattel on the development of the Monster High game. They also highlighted the efforts they made to deliver a truly authentic Monster High experience.

Bringing Authenticity to Monster High

Outright Games collaborated closely with Mattel to develop a product that aligns with the present Generation Three of Monster High. The characters in the game are easily identifiable as their counterparts from various media sources, and the game expands upon the mythos of the Monster High school itself.

Working alongside Mattel was an incredible realization of a childhood aspiration for Cleveland, who had spent his youth playing with Barbie dolls. Prior to this collaboration, Díaz had previously worked with Mattel on the “Matchbox Driving Adventures,” a game that hit shelves in 2024 as part of their latest lineup of licensed titles. He characterized the experience as challenging yet fulfilling, likening it to a fruitful partnership.

They were quite challenging to work with initially, but it turned out to be worth it because it resulted in a genuinely immersive Monster High experience for us. We’re thrilled about our partnership…Our liaisons have consistently been accommodating regarding production deadlines and other aspects, and they’ve been incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. It’s been an exciting journey so far, and we can’t wait to collaborate with them again on future endeavors.

Cleveland’s involvement in the project had a personal, nostalgic feel since she used to play with Barbie dolls as a child. For her, working on the game was like living out the role of Game Designer Barbie – a dream come true. Moreover, she suggested that collaborating with Mattel lent authenticity and credibility to the game’s narrative and characters she created. This implied that Mattel played an active part in the development process of the game.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but appreciate Mattel’s dedication to enriching my gaming experience in Monster High: Skultimate Secrets. Beyond maintaining character consistency, they delved deeper, helping me uncover the intricate lore that forms the foundation of this captivating world. This exploration didn’t just offer players an unprecedented chance to delve into the school itself, but also revealed the school’s hidden secrets and mysteries, making each gameplay session a thrilling journey into its rich history.

I’m trying not to spoil anything for people who haven’t played it, but the school itself is a mystery, right? We don’t know if the school is alive or if it’s not alive, and what we do know from the stories is that it’s protected by this power. There’s basically this barrier within this game. You get to find out exactly what the barrier is, why the school was placed where it was placed, and how that barrier protects and reacts after a certain amount of time. When your character comes in, they are a key factor to saving the school. And I’m not going to give any more than that. You definitely have to play the game to find out why you’re a key factor.

The Secrets of Monster High

Uncovering hidden mysteries within the school setting is a significant aspect of the Skultimate Secrets toy series too. These toys are designed to open various compartments, revealing aspects of the Monster High universe, Easter eggs, and other surprises. The name itself isn’t coincidental, as the gameplay aligns well with the Skultimate Secrets line, encouraging exploration of hidden locations and challenges to uncover something novel. Mattel has put a lot of effort into detail with Generation Three, launched in 2022, making it an exciting experience not just for Generation Three’s primary audience (pre-teen girls), but also for older fans who grew up with previous generations of Monster High.

The game has received generally positive feedback on Steam, with players’ interactions being particularly praiseworthy towards Outright. The main criticism the team has encountered is that the 10-hour platformer is too brief. However, for its intended audience, this duration is common, according to Díaz. Yet, both developers agree it’s a good issue to have – similar to the saying in entertainment that leaving the audience wanting more is desirable.
