One Wonder Woman Project Is Given A Promising Update From James Gunn

Key Takeaways

  • Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman era might be over, but a new TV series, Paradise Lost, will explore Diana’s backstory.
  • James Gunn will likely recast Wonder Woman because he and Peter Safran are restructuring DCU.
  • Paradise Lost is in active development, but the project is not yet in production until scripts are completed.

As a long-time fan of the DC Universe, I must admit that the news about Gal Gadot’s potential departure as Wonder Woman is bittersweet. While it’s disappointing to say goodbye to such an iconic portrayal, I am excited about the prospect of exploring Diana’s backstory in the upcoming TV series, Paradise Lost.

Gal Gadot’s tenure as Wonder Woman might have concluded, yet fans eager for more about this iconic superheroine can look forward to delving deeper into her past through an upcoming television show. However, it seems a different actress will likely portray the character.

Gal Gadot gained widespread recognition when she was chosen to play the role of Wonder Woman. She first appeared on screen in 2016 in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and her performance received much acclaim. Since then, she has starred in two standalone films – Wonder Woman (2017) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), both directed by Patty Jenkins. An initial plan for a third film, Wonder Woman 3, with Gadot reprising her role as Wonder Woman and Jenkins directing the third installment, was set in motion. However, this plan was abandoned when James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-heads of DC Studios in October 2022, leading to a revamp of the DC Universe and recasting of key characters such as Superman. Despite the likelihood that Gadot will not return as Wonder Woman, a prequel TV series titled Paradise Lost is currently being developed, providing fans with more insight into Diana Price’s backstory, aka Wonder Woman.

One fan brought up Wonder Woman‘s origin in Threads, asking Gunn if many know about her backstory. Her origin story revealed that she was sculpted from clay by her mother, Queen Hippolyta, and the Greek Gods gave her life with superhuman powers. The fan was wondering if Gunn’s circle had a different take on her origin. “Not as many people do – also because she’s had various origin stories,” Gunn replied.

A curious fan enquired whether director Gunn had any news about the progress of Paradise Lost and if it was currently in production since they were eagerly awaiting its release. To this, Gunn responded, “Very active development” is underway. In July, Gunn provided an update on Paradise Lost via a forum post. He clarified that the project isn’t being filmed unless it has been given the green light, such as Superman, Supergirl, Penguin, Peacemaker, Lanterns. At this point, the project is not in development because there are no written scripts, but they will work on it once the scripts are completed. This might also be why no casting announcements have been made for the project yet. “Paradise Lost, like many other titles known and unknown, is still in active development,” the filmmaker explained. “It will go into production when we have a script or scripts we believe are excellent and ready to shoot – never before.” The director added, “We haven’t officially cast anything that hasn’t been greenlit.

As a dedicated fan, I’m sharing some intriguing insights about the potential recasting of Wonder Woman for an upcoming TV series. It seems quite plausible that James Gunn might reprise the role, but Gal Gadot may not be seen in her superhero costume this time around. A user on Thread made an interesting point, suggesting that a top-tier star isn’t necessary to play Wonder Woman, as Gadot wasn’t one when she initially landed the part. However, Gunn firmly believes he hired the best actors for the role.
