Terminally Ill Fan Played Borderlands 4 And Said “It Was Amazing”

As a gamer who has seen my fair share of gaming milestones and heartwarming stories, I must say that Caleb McAlpine’s tale is one that will forever remain etched in the annals of our community. It’s not every day that we get to witness such an extraordinary act of kindness and dedication from developers like Gearbox Software.

In a heartwarming turn of events, when a dedicated fan of the Borderlands series, who was battling a terminal illness, appealed to the developers at Gearbox Software, they granted him early access to play Borderlands 4.

Caleb McAlpine, a passionate Borderlands fan who is battling Stage 4 terminal cancer, got the incredible opportunity to be flown out with a companion to Gearbox Software’s office, where he could preview the upcoming game in person. In a heartfelt post on Reddit, McAlpine shared his extraordinary studio visit experience.

Following my encounter with the developers and CEO Randy Pitchford, as well as trying out an early version of Borderlands 4, I felt compelled to acknowledge and thank everyone who played a part in turning this vision into a tangible reality.

McAlpine shared that he had a fantastic time playing what’s been developed so far for Borderlands 4, and expressed gratitude to everyone for their love and support in making the game possible. He admitted he might not be around when the game launches, but wanted to extend his thanks nonetheless. The experience was truly remarkable and awesome, he added.

2025 marks the anticipated release of Borderlands 4, which will be playable on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and personal computers. Further information regarding the game will be shared at a future time.

According to the most recent update from McApline in October, his life expectancy would be approximately two years or less if the cancer’s spread could be managed with chemotherapy.

We wish Caleb all the best in his current fight.
