Elder Scrolls 6: The Case For and Against a New School of Magic

Elder Scrolls 6: The Case For and Against a New School of Magic

As a seasoned Elder Scrolls enthusiast with over two centuries worth of Tamriel exploration under my belt, I’m eagerly anticipating the magical possibilities that await us in The Elder Scrolls 6. While Skyrim’s magic system was streamlined, it felt somewhat restrictive compared to the expansive options available in earlier games.

In the expansive world of Tamriel from ‘The Elder Scrolls’, there’s a wealth of possibilities for magic. However, when it comes to ‘Skyrim’, there are only a few schools of magic explored. Given that Tamriel and ‘The Elder Scrolls’ universe in general boast vast magical potential, introducing a new school of magic might not be too far-fetched an idea for ‘The Elder Scrolls 6‘ considering that the magic system in ‘Skyrim’ was somewhat restricted compared to earlier games in ‘The Elder Scrolls’.

In contrast to how Skyrim organized its spells within distinct magical schools, The Elder Scrolls 6 could potentially redefine the very essence of magic in Tamriel’s planes, creating entirely new forms and schools of magic. This could enable players to explore unprecedented depths when engaging with the world on a magical level, whether subtly or profoundly. Alternatively, The Elder Scrolls 6 might opt to delve deeper into the existing magical schools it introduced in Skyrim, such as Conjuration, which harbors significant potential that was not fully realized in its previous iteration.

Reasons for Creating a New School of Magic in The Elder Scrolls 6

In all likelihood, the setting for The Elder Scrolls 6 will be a fresh region of Tamriel compared to previous games. Each Empire province boasts its own distinct culture, history, and traditions, making it fitting for the game series’ lore to incorporate exclusive magic education and customs unique to each area. With The Elder Scrolls 6 being set in an unexplored part of Tamriel, this presents a fantastic opportunity to introduce a new magical school that could potentially be specific to the province and its culture.

In my perspective as a passionate fan, when considering the magic system for The Elder Scrolls 6, I believe it’s wise to draw inspiration from the rich magical lore of its predecessors. For instance, The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall and The Elder Scrolls: Battlespire introduced a School of Thaumaturgy, which could potentially be integrated into a revamped version in the upcoming game. Additionally, various magic aspects from previous games such as Skyrim’s Shouts, racial Powers, alchemy, enchanting, soul gems, and Standing Stones all offer exciting opportunities to develop fresh magic systems for The Elder Scrolls 6.

Reasons Against Creating a New School of Magic in The Elder Scrolls 6

In Skyrim, the magical schools were noticeably more restricted compared to earlier Elder Scrolls games. Instead of introducing a completely novel school of magic for The Elder Scrolls 6, it would be beneficial to expand upon the existing ones as seen in previous series installments, adding new spells and bringing back fan-favorites from the past.

In some traditional magical schools, there are spells that aren’t routinely accessible to character players. For instance, the School of Conjuration, which includes summoning and controlling spirits or objects, also incorporates elements of necromancy like raising the dead. However, necromancy as a whole could be more extensively developed in the “Elder Scrolls” universe, and it is often classified as a distinct school of magic in other intellectual properties.

In “The Elder Scrolls 6”, the expansion of necromancy could offer a rich lore experience and role-playing opportunities. With its use of soul gems, dedication of a plane to souls affected by it, and varied cultural perceptions, this ancient practice could be further developed without introducing a new school of magic. Instead, it would involve reorganizing the existing School of Conjuration to accommodate the unique aspects of necromancy.
