The new HBO series based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will be much larger in scope than the original movies, which had to fit the story into a limited format. This allows the series to include more details and storylines from the books that were left out before. Fans are hoping the Harry Potter TV series will build on the earlier films and deliver a richer, more complete story.
The first preview for the new Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone series suggests HBO is doing a great job with the adaptation. The teaser features scenes from the book (also known as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) that fans who grew up with the series have been hoping to see, including Harry’s difficult life with the Dursleys on Privet Drive and his journey to Hogwarts.
Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone Delivers A Deeper, More Mature Story
In the new trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry’s aunt, Petunia Dursley, provides the initial narration. The scene, set ten years after Harry first came to live with them, is much more somber than in the original film, where Fiona Shaw and Richard Griffiths played his aunt and uncle with a lighter touch. This version effectively conveys the difficulty and harshness of Harry’s childhood, showing moments like him being bullied at school.
Uncle Vernon was in the living room, reading the newspaper as the book described. Petunia mostly addressed Harry, saying, “I’ve told you before. You’re a normal boy, and it’s time you started behaving that way.”
The preview shows Harry being forced into the cupboard under the stairs and running through school. While the first Harry Potter movie doesn’t show Harry and his cousin Dudley’s time at primary school, the later films seem to include this part of their lives. The preview also introduces Dudley’s friends – Piers, Dennis, Malcolm, and Gordon – who are shown bullying Harry. They frequently team up to mistreat him, and their favorite pastime is chasing and harassing him. In one scene from the preview, two bullies hold Harry while Dudley and another friend approach him, and Harry looks visibly scared.
You know, one of the details I loved in the movie was when Aunt Petunia gave Harry a haircut. It was straight out of the first book, specifically the ‘Vanishing Glass’ chapter! They really nailed how she just grabbed kitchen scissors and hacked away at his hair – the book mentions how fast it grew, and you could feel that in the scene. She even left some choppy bangs trying to cover up his scar, all while reminding him he wasn’t anything special. It was such a small thing, but it really brought that moment from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to life.
Aunt Petunia, frustrated that Harry’s haircuts always looked messy, once grabbed kitchen scissors and gave him a very short haircut, almost shaving his head. She left his bangs long enough to cover the scar on his forehead.
This small detail really highlights how difficult Harry’s life was with the Dursleys, adding depth to his story. The way Petunia stresses the word ‘special’ suggests she’s trying to ignore or downplay any evidence of Harry’s magic.

Harry Suffering With The Dursleys Will Make The Letter From Hogwarts His Harder
Fans of the Harry Potter books have always wanted to see more of the difficult times Harry endured living with his unkind relatives – the constant fear and unhappiness before he discovered the wizarding world. HBO’s upcoming series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, has a great chance to show these early experiences in detail, revealing how Harry’s life before his eleventh birthday shaped him into the wizard we know.
I’m so excited about the cast for the new production! Dominic McLaughlin is going to be Harry, which I think is perfect, and Arabella Stanton will play Hermione, with Alistair Stout as Ron. I’m also really happy with the Dursleys – Bel Powley as Petunia, Daniel Rigby as Vernon, and Amos Kitson as Dudley. But it doesn’t stop there! We’ve got John Lithgow as Dumbledore – can you believe it?! – and Nick Frost as Hagrid, which is amazing. Janet McTeer is Professor McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu is taking on the role of Snape. Plus, Luke Thallon will be Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse is Filch, Katherine Parkinson is Molly Weasley, and Johnny Flynn is Lucius Malfoy. Seriously, the lineup is incredible!
The movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will debut on HBO during the Christmas season of 2026, and will be available to stream only on HBO Max.
