10 Horror Games That Are Perfectly Written

Horror game fans all want different things. Some prioritize atmosphere, engaging gameplay, or a compelling story. While it’s often challenging to create a truly great narrative in a video game, especially a horror game, there are a few exceptional titles that deliver stories as good as the best in any genre.

Several horror games, like the JRPG-inspired Parasite Eve and Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed game that became an HBO series, really raised the bar for storytelling. While these stories aren’t always perfectly logical, they’re enjoyable, captivating, and deliver scares that players won’t soon forget.

There will be no spoilers.

Alan Wake 2

Behold, My Mind Palace

Okay, so basically continues the story right after the first game. Alan Wake is still trapped in this crazy other world, and now you play as Saga Anderson, an FBI agent who gets pulled into the weirdness surrounding him and the town of Bright Falls, Washington. I started as Saga investigating a murder, and honestly, at first I was just thinking ‘okay, normal case,’ but things quickly got super strange. It didn’t take long to realize there was way more going on than just a simple crime – we’re talking full-on supernatural stuff!

Players can feel more connected to Saga because her Mind Palace allows them to actively participate in solving the mysteries. While her approach is more engaging than Alan’s internal thoughts in his world, both stories are crucial as everything eventually connects.

BioShock

From Utopia To Underwater Nightmare

The game BioShock immediately draws you in when the main character, Jack, finds himself in the underwater city of Rapture after a plane crash. Once a hopeful paradise, Rapture has fallen into disrepair and is now filled with crazed citizens suffering from a mysterious illness. Players can fight back using a variety of weapons and by unlocking special abilities called Plasmids.

Throughout Jack’s adventure, you’ll meet various characters with their own goals, but the real heart of BioShock is the city of Rapture and the story it silently reveals. Memorable encounters with Big Daddies, protecting the Little Sisters, and navigating the crumbling city under the control of Andrew Ryan will all contribute to a lasting impression of the game’s narrative.

The Evil Within 2

Daughter Dilemmas

In The Evil Within 2, Detective Sebastian Castellanos returns to the bizarre, dreamlike world of the first game to save his kidnapped daughter, Lily. This time, the threat seems to come from his own wife, who is manipulating this twisted reality and sending monsters after him. Compared to the original game, The Evil Within 2 is easier to follow, eliminating the need for external note-taking. Sebastian is a more developed character, and players will connect with his desperate search for Lily and his confusion over his wife’s actions. The game explores this through his relationships with other characters like Liam O’Neal, poignant flashbacks with his daughter and wife, and his determination to persevere despite being injured.

Half-Life 2

The Black Suites Are Coming

Similar to BioShock, Half-Life 2 creates a strong atmosphere and tells much of its story through the game’s environments. Players take on the role of Gordon Freeman, beginning in a rundown city before escaping into the wider world.

Okay, so the game throws everything at you – soldiers, crazy mutants, weird tech, aliens from other dimensions, and this one seriously creepy figure in a suit. It’s a wild ride! Honestly, Gordon is a silent guy, but the characters around him, especially Alyx and her dad, are fantastic. They have really great dialogue and the game’s environments, like Ravenholm, are just awesome. The only bummer is that we’ve been waiting for the next part of the story forever. But if you look at Half-Life 2 as its own thing, it’s totally a satisfying experience.

Calling Half-Life 2 a horror game might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it definitely uses enough horror elements to be worth noting.

The Last Of Us

Road Trip!

Over the last few decades, The Last of Us stands out as a remarkably well-written horror story, effectively blending emotional depth with genuine scares. The game begins before a deadly outbreak, following Joel Miller as he flees his home and tragically loses his daughter. Years later, we find him a hardened and hopeless man tasked with transporting a young girl, Ellie, from Boston to Seattle. As they travel, Joel gradually begins to care for Ellie, forming a bond along the way.

The game truly shines in moments like Joel opening up to Ellie about the world before the outbreak, and Ellie’s surprisingly sweet, if a little cheesy, sense of humor. The story unfolds during a relentlessly intense and brutal journey, as they face terrifying infected creatures, dangerous bandits, and other threats from the very beginning.

Parasite Eve

Getting To The Gooey Center

In the horror RPG Parasite Eve, a strange disaster is turning people into a slimy substance and animals into terrifying creatures in New York City. Detective Aya Brea gets involved when she begins investigating Eve, an opera singer who has mysteriously transformed. Her investigation takes her through various locations like opera houses, zoos, and hospitals as she tries to uncover the truth behind the unfolding events.

Players will feel the intense emotions of the story, whether it’s through Aya’s overwhelming situation or Daniel’s devotion to his son as the boy faces a life-or-death crisis. Despite lacking voice acting, this PlayStation 1 game stands the test of time thanks to its powerful storytelling – a simple look between the characters can convey so much meaning.

Resident Evil 4

Used To Be A Cop Myself

While Resident Evil 4 is often silly and over-the-top, it still boasts a strong story. The game follows Leon S. Kennedy as he travels to Europe to rescue Ashley Graham, the President’s daughter. He quickly finds himself in a remote village full of hostile locals, and soon learns they’re part of a cult infected by a mind-controlling parasite called Las Plagas.

Leon’s interactions with both allies and enemies – from villains like Salazar to characters like Ada – add depth to him beyond his first appearance in Resident Evil 2. Whether you play the original or the remake, Resident Evil 4 delivers a fantastic horror experience with iconic lines, thrilling action, and some of the most memorable characters in the series.

Returnal

How Did That Get Here?

Returnal is a fast-paced, third-person shooter where you play as astronaut Selene Vassos. She crash-lands on a strange planet and finds herself trapped in a time loop – every time she dies, she starts over. But the mystery goes deeper than that! As Selene explores, she uncovers fragments of her past, revealed through the shifting landscapes of the planet, including glimpses of familiar things like houses and cars.

As players progress and uncover more of the story, they’ll gradually piece together the truth, leading to a completely unexpected twist. Revealing more details would spoil the surprise, but the game skillfully connects Selene’s history to the challenges she faces now, drawing parallels between past trauma and present danger.

Silent Hill 2 (2024)

Foggy Impressions

The original Silent Hill 2 remains a beloved PlayStation 2 game, but the 2024 remake is worth checking out for a more understandable story. The game starts with James Sunderland going to the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his deceased wife. As he fights monsters and solves puzzles, he meets others also trapped in the town, each seemingly tormented by their own pasts, just like James.

As the story unfolds, players will be wondering about James’s wife, the identities of these new characters, and whether James can find a way out. The game doesn’t offer simple solutions, and that’s exactly what keeps fans engaged. It encourages players to ponder deeper themes like life, death, what it means to be aware, and the unseen bonds that connect us all.

2001’s Silent Hill 2 also has near-perfect writing.

The Walking Dead (Telltale)

I Had A Friend Named Lee

Telltale’s first season of The Walking Dead is known for its excellent storytelling, often compared favorably to The Last of Us. This highlights how important a strong narrative is for adventure games like this one. The story begins with Lee Everett, a prisoner who escapes while being transferred, after his guards are attacked by zombies. He soon meets a young girl named Clementine, and together they search for safety among other survivors.

Each episode presents players with difficult choices that change the story’s direction. While the game isn’t focused on action, the pressure of making quick decisions during tense situations – like deciding who gets food or who might have to be sacrificed, or whether to trust strangers – can be overwhelming. These choices take a toll on the character Lee, and finding the best path forward isn’t always simple, which reflects the harsh realities of a world after the apocalypse.
