The world of Naruto features many memorable villains, but Madara Uchiha stands out as the most iconic. Growing up during a time of constant war, Madara longed for a peaceful world without suffering. Though his intentions were somewhat good, he became a merciless fighter, prepared to sacrifice anything – or anyone – to make his vision a reality.

Madara was a key villain in the Fourth Great Ninja War, so he battled many powerful fighters, including Naruto and all five Kages. However, even with his important role, there were several strong ninja he never faced. This was either because they lived and died before he returned, or because their paths simply never crossed during the war.

Hanzo

I remember learning about the history of the ninja world, and long before Naruto’s time, there was Hanzo. He was a truly terrifying figure who basically ruled the Hidden Rain Village through sheer power. People said he was unbelievably strong, skilled in all kinds of ninja techniques, and could fight for weeks without tiring. What really set him apart, though, was his summon – a giant salamander named Ibuse. That thing was easily one of the most powerful summons anyone had ever seen.

Hanzo was incredibly dangerous because his snake partner’s venom could cripple large armies. He’d poison his enemies, then finish them off with his own strength. He’s the one who famously named the Three Legendary Sannin after they endured a long, grueling fight against him, even though they didn’t win. Years before Madara was brought back to life, Nagato killed Hanzo, who had become overly cautious and let his skills decline due to fear of being attacked.

Orochimaru

I’ve always been fascinated by Orochimaru, even though he’s a pretty terrifying figure! He used to be a celebrated ninja of Konoha, trained by the Third Hokage himself, and was considered one of the Legendary Sannin. But he became obsessed with learning every single jutsu imaginable, which led him to betray his village and go down a really dark path. He didn’t care who he hurt or how much destruction he caused – all he cared about was gaining more power. It’s a tragic story, really, but incredibly compelling.

Orochimaru is often considered one of the most dangerous villains in anime, but he was also incredibly skilled. While not known for brute strength, his intelligence, quickness, and mastery of powerful ninja techniques made him a formidable opponent. Even Madara, a legendary fighter, would have likely faced a serious challenge if he’d ever battled Orochimaru.

Jiraiya

Before becoming the famous hero we all know, Naruto learned from many skilled teachers, but Jiraiya, his godfather, had the biggest impact on his life. Though he didn’t always seem it, Jiraiya was an incredibly powerful warrior, capable of inspiring fear in entire villages. He perfected the Rasengan and was a naturally gifted user of Sage Mode, demonstrating masterful control over chakra.

Naruto’s godfather was an incredibly skilled fighter, especially in hand-to-hand combat, with very few weaknesses. He was strong enough to hold off powerful opponents like Orochimaru and even battle all six Paths of Pain in a particularly intense fight. Sadly, he was killed by one of his top students, Nagato, just a few months before Madara reappeared.

Sakumo Hatake

As many Naruto fans are aware, Konoha has produced some of the most powerful ninjas ever. This includes the main character, Naruto, who ultimately saved the world, and Sasuke, the strongest Uchiha. However, one character is often overlooked despite having incredible potential: Sakumo Hatake. Kakashi’s father was a highly regarded and popular Jonin, known for both his skill on missions and his warm personality.

Sakumo didn’t appear much on screen, mostly in memories of Kakashi’s past and a brief reunion with his son’s spirit. Even with limited screen time, fans gathered that he was rumored to be stronger than the legendary Sanin – a rare feat. Sadly, the world and its viewers will never know the full extent of his abilities, as he tragically took his own life to protect his son’s reputation.

Minato Uzumaki

The Third Great Ninja War saw the rise of many legendary ninja, but Minato Namikaze – known as the Yellow Lightning of Konoha – became particularly famous. As the father of the main character and the Fourth Hokage, he was admired throughout the ninja world for his strength, smart tactics, and incredible speed.

He earned his nickname because of his unique kunai, which had special markings that allowed him to use a powerful teleportation technique. This let him instantly travel to any place where he’d thrown the knives. Naruto’s father was incredibly skilled with this ability, able to quickly defeat groups of enemies and break through enemy defenses. While he fought in the Fourth Great Ninja War, he never got the chance to battle Madara, which many fans were disappointed by.

Nagato / Pain

Before Naruto was born, Jiraiya thought he’d found the legendary hero destined to bring peace to the ninja world. He believed this hero was Nagato, a powerful but reserved young ninja from Amegakure who possessed the rare Rinnegan. However, the death of Nagato’s close friend, Yahiko, deeply affected him, causing him to abandon his ideals and become a destructive terrorist.

Nagato’s Rinnegan gave him incredible powers, far beyond those of a typical ninja. He could control gravity and manipulate corpses using black rods, making him a devastatingly powerful opponent – a fact highlighted in the highly-regarded Assault arc. Despite supposedly following Madara’s orders (who was secretly Obito), Nagato never actually fought the real Uchiha, as he passed away soon after his defeat by Naruto.

Hamura Otsutsuki

I’m absolutely fascinated by Hamura, the lesser-known brother of the Sage of Six Paths! He doesn’t get nearly enough credit, but honestly, he was a total hero. When their mother, Kaguya, lost control and went wild with power, Hamura was crucial in saving the Earth. People tend to focus on his twin, but Hamura was just as strong – seriously, just as powerful as Hagoromo! Being an Otsutsuki meant he had access to abilities that were completely beyond anything a normal human could even dream of.

Hamura was incredibly powerful, able to completely control his Chakra and even wield Truth Seeking Orbs – artifacts capable of destroying anything they touched. Despite this, he was a peaceful person who preferred to trust others and avoid fighting. He lived a long life and eventually died of old age while fulfilling a promise to his brother: guarding the remains of the Ten-Tails on the moon, ensuring it never fell into Madara’s hands.

Hagoromo Otsutsuki

The Sage of Six Paths is a legendary figure in the world of Naruto, often called the creator of ninjas and a hero who saved the world. Like his brother Hamura, he was born with incredible power as a member of the Otsutsuki clan, making him far stronger than most. However, his greatest strength came from being the host of the Ten-Tails, the most powerful of all the tailed beasts.

By absorbing a powerful creature and mastering its special energy, Hagoromo gained control over both creation and destruction, essentially having power over life, death, and the very fabric of reality. He used this power to establish a long era of peace in the ninja world, but that peace didn’t last long after he passed away. Since Hagoromo died hundreds of years before Madara returned, the two never had the opportunity to fight and test each other’s strength.
