Sasaki and Miyano isn’t just a standout boys love anime; it’s one of the best romance anime ever made. Traditionally, boys love (yaoi) anime often focused on troubled relationships with unhealthy dynamics. While those shows still exist, the genre has evolved, and Sasaki and Miyano perfectly embodies the current trend towards sweet, positive, and healthy relationships.
While Sasaki and Miyano fits comfortably within the BL (boys’ love) anime genre, it’s also unique and doesn’t have many shows quite like it. Because of this, if you loved this series – particularly if you’re new to BL anime – it can be hard to find something similar to watch. This article aims to help with that.
1. Go For It, Nakamura!
A Funny BL Anime That Isn’t About Romance
2025 wasn’t a great year for boys love anime, and the shows that did come out weren’t particularly memorable (though Babanbabanban Vampire is a pretty good comedy). This year has been slightly better, with new BL anime appearing in both the Winter and Spring seasons. Isekai Office Worker from Winter 2026 is okay, but the central relationship feels a bit outdated, reminiscent of older yaoi where one character is overly possessive. It might not appeal to fans of Sasaki and Miyano, but if you’re interested in trying every new BL anime, it’s worth checking out. At the very least, the combination of the isekai and boys love genres is interesting.
The upcoming anime Go For It, Nakamura! (Spring 2026) is shaping up to be a standout BL series, potentially filling a gap since the popular Twilight Out of Focus in 2024. What makes it unique is its simple premise: Nakamura has a crush on his classmate, Hirose, and just wants to get to know him. The first few episodes focus on Nakamura’s attempts to become friends with Hirose, and whether that friendship blossoms into something more is secondary. It’s more of a comedy than a traditional romance, with each episode showcasing Nakamura’s often-failed attempts to connect with Hirose. Despite the setbacks, they do begin to build a connection, and surprisingly, a BL manga actually helps them start talking.
Don’t go in expecting a romance, and you might love Go For It, Nakamura!
2. Doukyusei: Classmates
BL Anime At Its Best
Released a few years before popular series like Sasaki and Miyano and Given, Doukyusei: Classmates was a refreshing change of pace when it first came out. Before 2016, it was very difficult to find anime focusing on sweet, developing relationships between two male students. This isn’t a criticism of earlier works like Junjo Romantica, which were influential, but the genre simply hadn’t explored this kind of story much before. While Given helped evolve the BL genre, Doukyusei: Classmates really began that shift.
Like Sasaki and Miyano, this hour-long movie centers on the connection between two students, Hikaru and Rihito, who bond over a common passion. Instead of romance focused on attraction, their connection blossoms through music, as Hikaru assists Rihito in preparing for a performance. Doukyusei: Classmates is a heartwarming and simple love story, free from drama and filled with genuine happiness.
3. Welcome Home
A Progressive Romance About Family
Since Welcome Home is a new anime from the Spring 2024 season, it’s too soon to give it a strong recommendation. However, the show is promising, and the original manga by Ichi Ichikawa is highly regarded.
Spring 2024 had a lot of popular returning anime like KonoSuba, Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, and Mushoku Tensei, plus highly anticipated new shows such as Kaiju No. 8, Whisper Me a Love Song, and Spice and Wolf. Because of this crowded season, Welcome Home didn’t get much attention. It’s a romance focused on a boys’ love story, which naturally appeals to a smaller audience. It’s also part of the Omegaverse, a complex universe with many interconnected stories that plays with traditional gender roles, making it an especially niche series.
The core idea behind the Omegaverse is that it challenges traditional ideas about gender by introducing different status roles.
- Omegas are people (men or women) who can give birth.
- Alphas are people (men or women) who can get both genders pregnant.
People who haven’t seen anime from Studio Deen might not expect much, but they’re in for a surprise. This series tells a heartfelt and complex story about family, societal expectations, and the lasting effects of past trauma. It centers on Masaki and Hiromu, a married couple raising young children, where Masaki is an Omega and Hiromu is an Alpha. While their life is mostly filled with love, playful moments, and simple joys, they sometimes face prejudice because of Masaki’s identity. Having experienced discrimination himself, Masaki is determined to protect his children from those same fears.
I absolutely adore Welcome Home! It’s a really sweet and cozy slice-of-life anime that mainly focuses on the everyday adventures of the Fujiyoshi family. While it does deal with some heavier stuff now and then, it’s mostly just heartwarming and fun. What’s really impressive is how well it mixes drama, comedy, and romance – it all comes together to create something truly special, honestly! It feels like more than just a collection of scenes; it’s a complete, satisfying experience.
4. Yuri!!! On Ice
Most Famous BL Anime
When people think of sports anime, shows like Prince of Tennis, All Out, Ace of Diamonds, and Kuroko’s Basketball are usually what they picture. It’s easy to imagine baseball, football, or basketball, but competitive ice skating for men doesn’t typically come to mind.
With Yuri!!! on Ice, things are different. Like all great sports anime, it tells a story that’s captivating, even if you don’t know anything about figure skating. It’s also a fantastic BL (boys’ love) anime, featuring a diverse cast, clever writing, and surprising plot twists. Whether you’re interested in the skating itself or the romantic storyline, this series delivers.
5. Given
Challenging But Rewarding
Music has a special way of connecting with us, which might explain why anime featuring music is so popular. “Given” is a show that combines both romance (specifically between two men) and music, telling the story of high school students Mafuyu Sato and Ritsuka Uenoyama. Ritsuka helps Mafuyu learn to play a guitar that holds a special meaning – it belonged to Mafuyu’s first love. Soon after, Mafuyu joins Ritsuka’s band. “Given” isn’t afraid to tackle difficult emotions and can be quite intense. However, these heavier themes always serve to deepen the romantic connection between the two main characters, and it’s this willingness to explore both darkness and light that makes the show so compelling.
Before the popular series Sasaki and Miyano, Given played a huge role in revitalizing the boys love genre in the early 2020s. Many fans consider Given a turning point for BL, shifting the focus away from stories with large age gaps or problematic relationships and toward more realistic and thoughtful narratives. While Given occasionally touches on sensitive themes, it handles them with seriousness and acknowledges their potential harm.
The series is great, and the same can be said for the three movies.
6. Semantic Error
Brief Flashes Of Boys Love
Semantic Error is a South Korean manhwa (comic) that ran for about three years, resulting in nearly 100 chapters. It concluded in 2023 and is a highly enjoyable boys love series, making it a good pick for fans of Sasaki and Miyano. If you prefer watching instead of reading, a live-action adaptation was released in 2022. You can find it on Viki as either an 8-episode series or a movie, and watching at least one of these versions is essential for a truly satisfying experience.
There’s also a South Korean animated series, but it’s designed to add to the original story, not replace it. This short series, with just four episodes, shows everyday moments from the comic, focusing on the romantic relationship between the two main characters. It offers sweet glimpses into different stages of their connection and effectively showcases their chemistry. However, the anime doesn’t explain who the characters are, their backgrounds, what brings them together, or their motivations. Because of this, it’s best enjoyed by those already familiar with the comic, as a light and enjoyable addition to the main story.
7. 4 Week Lovers
High School Lovers Reunite In College
Let’s continue with South Korean animation – 4 Week Lovers is a short boys love anime adapted from a webcomic. Unlike Semantic Error, this 2023 series has 10 episodes and tells a mostly complete story, rather than just adapting scenes from the original source. While the webcomic is still recommended for those new to the story, the anime should be easy to follow and provides a satisfying arc for the main couple.
4 Week Lovers tells the story of Song Jaehee and Jeong Dojun, who were high school sweethearts but had a messy breakup when Dojun suddenly ended things. Now, they find themselves roommates in college. Jaehee claims he’s moved on, but secretly still has feelings for Dojun. After Jaehee injures his arm saving Dojun, Dojun proposes they try dating again for four weeks while Jaehee recovers.
“4 Week Lovers” is a bit unusual. The actors playing the main characters have good chemistry, and the high school scenes are really well done. However, the parts of the show set in college can be a little unsettling because the relationship involves some manipulation. While the show doesn’t try to be overly serious, and Jaehee’s behavior is mostly lighthearted, certain moments feel a bit uncomfortable.
8. Gakuen Handsome
BL Parody
Yaoi anime, and especially parody versions of it, are hard to find. Gakuen Handsome definitely isn’t a visual masterpiece, its characters aren’t particularly likable, and the main character is quite boring—but that’s all part of the joke. This anime consists of short, three-minute episodes and playfully satirizes common tropes in boys’ love stories, often referencing older series like Junjo Romantica and Gravitation.
If you’re looking for a BL anime to watch after Sasaki and Miyano, Gakuen Handsome might not be the best choice. Sasaki and Miyano avoids many of the common tropes that Gakuen Handsome playfully makes fun of. While Gakuen Handsome is still entertaining on its own, it’s much more enjoyable if you’re familiar with the conventions of the yaoi genre.
9. Heaven Official’s Blessing
Romance Is One Part Of An Epic Whole
Heaven Official’s Blessing is a Chinese animated series that explores the concept of divine love in a unique way. The main character, Xie Lian, isn’t just a person – he is a god, though one who has fallen from grace. He encounters Hua Cheng, a powerful and even more formidable divine being, while navigating his diminished status.
The relationship between Xie and Hua is beautifully subtle, developing slowly and naturally. Because it’s woven into a larger story filled with mystery, religious themes, and mythology, their romance doesn’t feel forced or overly central, unlike in many boys’ love anime. This allows their love to feel genuine and uniquely divine.

10. No.6
Fun Setting, Likable Protagonists
Love tends to feel the same, no matter where or when you experience it – whether it’s in the distant past, outer space, or a fantastical world filled with dragons and magic. “No. 6” is a science fiction story set in a troubled future, focusing on the relationship between two young men.
The show excels at creating realistic characters within a believable world. While not flawless, its beautiful animation and art style elevate a solid manga source material. It doesn’t quite reach the comedic heights of Sasaki and Miyano, but it’s strong in almost every other area.
