As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent exploring the post-apocalyptic world of Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequels, I must say that Guerrilla Games has truly outdone themselves with their immersive storytelling and intricate lore. The prospect of delving deeper into the world of Aloy and her companions in Horizon 3 is an exciting one, but it’s the focus on the older tribes reacting to humanity’s past that truly piques my interest.
After wrapping up the releases of “Horizon Zero Dawn: Remastered” and “LEGO Horizon Adventures”, Guerrilla Games can now concentrate more on the development of their upcoming, as-yet unnamed “Horizon” multiplayer game and “Horizon 3”. Since the release of “Horizon Forbidden West” in 2022 and the Burning Shores expansion in 2023, players have been speculating about how the “Horizon” series might conclude. Aloy may embark on a journey across the Pacific Ocean to seek help from the advanced Quen Empire, or perhaps Sylens will attempt to harness old 21st-century technology to defeat Nemesis. However, an area of focus for “Horizon 3” that Guerrilla might emphasize is exploring how older tribes respond to humanity’s past, rather than introducing new tribes.
Horizon’s Exponential Revival of Old World Knowledge
Since Ted Faro wiped out the advanced intellectual subroutine APOLLO from Project: Zero Dawn millennia ago, humanity has generally been in a less technologically advanced state. The remnants of 21st-century buildings and enormous robotic creatures dot the post-apocalyptic landscapes, but the absence of access to old-world data forced early civilizations to develop their own explanations for the world, much like ancient humans did before the Common Era. This isolation and lack of context led various tribes to interpret security systems as divine beings and robots/artificial intelligence as malevolent figures that punished their ancestors.
In contrast, not all civilizations were completely cut off from the past. The Quen uncovered a wealth of early Focus artifacts, granting them limited access to ancient knowledge that propelled their empire into technological greatness. The Tenakth, on the other hand, gleaned insights about old military structures and tactics from museum exhibits. Furthermore, the Oseram managed to restore some old-world technology, like holographic displays in Las Vegas, which served as a source of inspiration for their own inventions. Scattered across the lands are Focus devices that tribesmen can find and use to activate operational old-world facilities, such as those used by Sylens in Horizon Zero Dawn.
Horizon 3’s Potential Old World Knowledge Plot Thread
In both Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, Aloy has gained a wealth of factual knowledge about the old world through her Focus device, teachings from Sylens, and her genetic link to Dr. Elisabet Sobeck, the inventor of Project: Zero Dawn. By the end of Forbidden West, Aloy and her comrades managed to obtain a copy of APOLLO from the extraterrestrial humans, the Far Zenith, which they later combined with Project: Zero Dawn’s artificial intelligence GAIA. This enabled Aloy’s allies to delve deeper into humanity’s past, seeking ways to combat the impending threat known as Nemesis. In the Burning Shores expansion, Erend intends to distribute Focus devices among the Oseram people so they too can prepare for battle against Nemesis.
Sharing ancient knowledge with Erend’s and Aloy’s tribes by their friends might lead to more disputes and challenges, as the traditions of many post-apocalyptic societies have been ingrained for centuries. Some of these civilizations may not readily accept that they’ve been mistaken about their cultures all this time. Religious leaders in Utaru and Carja, such as Sun Priests, might be particularly resistant to accepting old-world knowledge, since it could potentially undermine their authority within their tribes if the deities they serve turn out to be mere figurines instead of divine entities.
How Tribes May React to Ancient Knowledge in Horizon 3
In the world of Horizon, the Quen could be the fiercest opponents to this newfound information, as their authoritarian society strictly controls access to old-world data, with only government officials and nobles allowed to handle it. They might actively resist Aloy’s attempts to educate the tribes because such knowledge could potentially disrupt the social order within the Quen Empire. Conversely, the Oseram and Tenakth might be more receptive to knowledge, seeing it as a means to advance their technology, weapons, and combat strategies. Despite her repeated successes in the Horizon series, Aloy may still encounter some deep-seated prejudice among the tribes in Horizon 3, which she will need to overcome to gain their full support in combating Nemesis.
Over the span of the Horizon series, a total of seven distinct tribes have been showcased: the Nora, Carja, Oseram, Banuk, Utaru, Tenakth, and Quen.
