As a dedicated fan of Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation that borders on giddy excitement when it comes to the upcoming third installment. The hints and foreshadowing throughout the franchise have been as subtle as MJ swinging through Manhattan, and it seems almost inevitable that Green Goblin will make an appearance.

The straightforward manner in which Marvel’s Spider-Man has structured its storyline, combined with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 hinting at a third mainline installment being the last, indicates that we might not be taken by many unexpected twists when it comes to plot points within Insomniac’s series. As they work on wrapping up the revenge storyline involving Otto Octavius (the O’s) and Norman Osborn, Insomniac faces crucial decisions about which characters will feature in the main campaign and who will populate the open-world side content. There have been hints that the Green Goblin could be the main antagonist in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, and it will be intriguing to see how Harry Osborn fits into the story of the upcoming game.

In the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game, Insomniac Games had the option to either eliminate Harry or exclude him from the storyline. Since they chose not to do so, it’s reasonable to infer that Harry will continue to have a role, whether major or minor. It would seem odd for Harry to quickly transition from Venom to becoming the Green Goblin, as this could imply Norman Osborn taking the G-SERUM instead. However, the specifics about Harry’s condition in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and any potential Venom sequel are yet to be revealed. Yet, there is a possibility for Harry to assume the role of Green Goblin in the future, not as the traditional villain, but potentially as an ally to Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

At Least One Green Goblin in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is Inevitable

In the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, Green Goblin is often hinted at and it seems almost certain that he will be either the second-to-last or final battle when the story eventually wraps up. On the other hand, Doctor Octopus has been maintained in the storyline, implying that he may regain his mechanical tentacles or play a significant role in plotting from the Raft.

As I find myself temporarily sidelined, it looks like Harry might be subjected to Norman’s G-SERUM experimentation, potentially transforming into the Green Goblin. If Norman is to embrace his Green Goblin persona, he might need to ingest the G-SERUM, a move that could become harder to justify unless Harry meets an untimely end in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and triggers Norman to morph into a vengeful, grieving Green Goblin, bent on wreaking havoc on the web-slingers.

It’s clear that the G-SERUM is meant for Harry. If it doesn’t reach him first, it could be confusing. Fortunately, due to the dynamic between Peter and Harry in both Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game and Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series, Insomniac has a modern and complex approach they might take that could enable Harry to put on the Goblin mask as a secondary character.

How Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 Can Adapt Ultimate Spider-Man’s Green Goblin

In Hickman’s “Ultimate Spider-Man,” Harry Osborn serves as both a villainous Green Goblin and a well-meaning ally to Peter, suggesting that Insomniac may have laid the groundwork for similar character development in their version of Harry.

In essence, it would be unnecessary for Insomniac to revert Harry to a villain, but that doesn’t mean he can’t have an active role in future stories. For example, Harry was ready to fight Kraven’s hunters and rescue Tombstone along with Peter when they were symbiote-clad sidekicks in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. If he receives another experimental treatment from his desperate father, Harry could become the perfect Green Goblin. A cure for Harry’s ailment with the G-SERUM could enable him to team up with Peter again, this time equipped with armor and technology hinted at in Marvel’s Spider-Man two games back.

This could create an interesting contrast between Harry’s Green Goblin being heavily armored and his father possibly transforming into a Green Goblin similar to the original Ultimate comic arc, where Norman is a massive, fireball-hurling brute. For now, we can only speculate why Harry continues to be a part of the Marvel’s Spider-Man series.
