As a huge fan of Life is Strange, I must admit that each character has their unique charm and complexities that make them stand out. However, when it comes to the romantic interests of Max Caulfield, there’s no denying that Chloe Price takes the cake – or should I say, pie?
The romantic elements in a story-driven game can significantly impact its quality, and this certainly applies to the Life is Strange series. Most games within this franchise give players the chance to explore romantic relationships as part of their journey, decisions made during these encounters potentially shaping the broader narrative.
The majority of these relationships and interactions in this narrative are skillfully crafted, effectively portraying young romance while incorporating the discomfort and eventual release that comes with it. In the game Life is Strange, the main characters are depicted as bisexual, offering you a choice between male or female romantic interests. Choosing becomes quite challenging indeed.
Not every potential love interest is suitable for our main character. The ideal romantic choice for any protagonist should reveal much about their personality, and the reasons for their compatibility should be clearly understood.
To clarify upfront: Eliot from Before the Storm won’t be part of our discussion. Despite his intense affection for Chloe, it remains unrequited. Moreover, there are clear warning signs associated with him that make him a potential concern.

10 Finn
A Rogue With Good Intentions
As a gamer, let me share my thoughts about Finn McNamara from Life is Strange 2. On my journey toward the California border with Sean and Daniel, we crossed paths with this free-spirited wanderer named Finn. At first sight, he appeared to be your typical stoner character, but upon closer interaction, I realized there’s much more depth to him than meets the eye.
Finn makes every effort to watch over his fellow drifters and the Diaz brothers, yet his dubious deeds stem from his desperate struggle to endure in a tumultuous history of his own.
Finn’s story culminates in him stealing from Merrill, the owner of the illegal weed farm the drifters worked at. Look–I understand robbing out of desperation, but including a young, impressionable child to help you on the heist just crosses the line for me. If I was Sean, I wouldn’t forgive Finn so easily.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge Finn’s affinity for Sean, even amidst Sean’s impulsive actions and complex personality traits that might raise some eyebrows. If you decide to pursue a romantic relationship with Sean, Finn is remarkably open and accepting of Sean’s sexuality. Finn consistently exhibits playful flirtatiousness, infectious joy, and boundless enthusiasm towards those he cherishes.
9 Rachel
Historians Would Say They Were “Just Friends”
It may strike you as unexpected that Rachel Amber ranks so low on the list. To me, her character seemed rather stereotypical, and I found the other game’s love interests more engaging. Given her significant role in Life is Strange and Before the Storm, it seems a pity that she hasn’t had her own game yet.
Rachel is often used as a narrative tool rather than a fully fleshed-out character. Her role in the story primarily revolves around her connections with others, particularly Chloe.
In the initial game “Life is Strange“, we mainly learn about Rachel from others and Chloe’s repeated praises of her as a wonderful person. However, we know very little else about her. It’s not until the game “Before the Storm” that we start to comprehend why Rachel was so significant to Chloe.
Rachel aligns closely with the “manic pixie dream girl” stereotype, as she stirs up Chloe’s adventurous spirit when they are together. Although they share a powerful friendship, both women encourage each other’s harmful habits, resorting to stealing and borrowing money for their flight from Arcadia Bay. Regrettably, Rachel proved to be a detrimental influence on Chloe in this scenario.
8 Cassidy
A Drifter With A Good Heart And An Angel’s Voice
Among the people they encounter during their journeys, Cassidy stands out as one of the friendliest. With a melodious voice that charms passersby, she performs as a street musician, or busker. Warm-hearted and genuine, she exudes an authentic Southern charm, treating those fortunate enough to be in her circle with honesty and kindness.
In my enthusiastic tale, if I play my cards wisely, I’ll end up getting a tattoo from Cassidy – a moment that could spark an enchanting romance between us. If fate allows it after Episode 3, she might even reach out to me, expressing her well-wishing and granting me the chance to maintain our connection.
Among the two romantic prospects, Cassidy appears to be the most down-to-earth. Unlike Finn who’s constantly engaged in grand plans, Cassidy seems content with a wandering lifestyle, which could potentially offer stability for Sean given the tumultuous journey they’ve experienced thus far.
7 Vinh
Smash Or Pass? Pass.
At Caledon University, Vinh Lang heads the Abraxas Society, and he has a touch of theatricality about him. Initially, he might seem aloof or distant, but once you manage to break down his guard, he reveals himself as a genuinely kind and sincere individual.
Although Vinh interacts extensively with Max within the narrative and shares a reasonable level of chemistry with him, it appears that he might not be the most suitable match for Max. Their dialogues lack the spark typically found in ideal pairs, and there seems to be a noticeable discrepancy between their personalities due to their differences.
Something about Vinh and Max’s “Smash or Pass” game rubs me the wrong way. Sure, it’s innocuous, and they’re both bonding by gossiping and drinking their troubles away, but the flirting feels a little stiff, and feels a little too “horny undergraduate” for the romance to go anywhere beyond friends or fling.
He’s a man with a large heart but questionable character, and Max is an introverted individual who seems to have little in common with him. There’s something odd about this pairing. Furthermore, if you turn down Vinh’s affection, it appears he eventually ends up with Reggie. As for the show Double Exposure, it doesn’t offer much insight into how Vinh might perform as a romantic partner.
6 Warren
Nice Guys Finish Last
Among Max’s dearest friends is Warren Graham, another movie enthusiast. It’s not just casual interest, but rather, he harbors a deep and intense affection for Max, which goes beyond mere friendship. To put it plainly, Warren is deeply smitten by Max.
Although Warren may seem overwhelming at times, it’s undeniable that he genuinely cares for Max and openly expresses his feelings towards her. This is something even Max herself acknowledges in her personal journal entries. The writers appear to have drawn upon memories of high school crushes when crafting the relationship between Max and Warren.
Warren is frequently labeled as “creepy,” “stalker-like,” and “self-righteous” by his critics. Yet, these accusations overlook the fact that Warren has consistently been a supportive friend to Max, seeking only her companionship in return.
Warren is so relentlessly hated that one Reddit user decided to write an essay defending the poor guy.
5 Steph
A Familiar Face From Arcadia Bay

In the story “Before the Storm”, you may recall Steph Gingrich, and she reappears in “True Colors” as Alex’s love interest. She is a passionate enthusiast of tabletop games, has an affinity for theater, and art – much like a typical Blackwell alumnus. Furthermore, her sexual orientation is openly lesbian.
Steph makes an exceptional romantic partner for Alex. They share the same passion for music, and this bond is strengthened by Steph’s unwavering loyalty. She exudes a strong commitment, often showing undying support for Alex, whether it’s in her musical pursuits or during challenging encounters.
3 Ryan
An Adorkable Sweetheart
If “golden retriever energy” was a character, it would resemble Ryan Lucan from “True Colors”. He’s a caring, affectionate park ranger in Haven Springs, and he’s quite charming as well. However, there’s an intriguing twist to his story – he turns out to be the son of the main antagonist, Jed.
Between Ryan and Steph, it’s tough to decide who is more suitable for this list as they both excel in terms of compatibility with Alex. Ultimately, the choice boils down to individual tastes and subtleties that might be too intricate for a list-based article.
Ryan managed to impress me significantly during his interaction with Alex at the spot where Gabe perished in Life is Strange. Compared to other male characters, his maturity level stands out as a refreshing change.
He’s also a huge dork during the LARP session. He is a sensitive soul, and though he isn’t as musically inclined as Steph is, he’s willing to do whatever he can to support Alex.
2 Amanda
Lots Of Potential But Lacked Screentime
Amanda Thomas is a comedian who also works as a bartender at the Snapping Turtle. She has a warm, cottagecore-inspired lesbian ambiance about her, and some might contend that she would be an excellent fit for Max, and perhaps even a healthier choice compared to Chloe.
In the brief time we’ve spent with Amanda in “Double Exposure”, it seems evident that she appears emotionally balanced. She acknowledges her attraction towards Max, yet demonstrates caution, understanding that Max carries a significant emotional burden, possibly from Chloe or Arcadia Bay, and therefore needs to proceed cautiously.
It’s evident that Amanda is compassionate towards Max since their very first encounter. In Episode 2, titled “Dead World”, following Safi’s demise, Amanda is one of the rare individuals who reaches out to Max and offers assistance without hesitation.
Regrettably, Amanda’s role often revolves around romantic aspects, leaving us yearning to witness more facets of her character. However, I have no reason to believe she wouldn’t put her life on the line for Max, given her exceptional qualities that would normally propel her to the top ranks.
1 Chloe
The Epitome of Complex Relationships
It’s clear that Chloe shares a deep, layered bond with Max, but it’s also undeniable that she carries significant flaws which might make her less than ideal for a healthy partnership.
Chloe advanced so high on the list primarily due to our extensive knowledge of her character; she seems more like a secondary hero in this game. Moreover, we have an exhaustive understanding of her relationship with Max, encompassing its entirety.
In the game ‘Life is Strange’, Chloe and Max’s relationship developed primarily due to their shared trauma stemming from Nathan Prescott and the storm. It was understandable for Chloe to feel angry with Max for abandoning her when she moved to Seattle, as she had to face numerous hardships on her own during that period.
In Max’s absence, Chloe became quite careless and disorganized. Yet, being with Chloe pushed Max beyond his usual boundaries and helped him emerge from his protective shell.
If not for the bond between Max and Chloe, the storyline wouldn’t have progressed as far as it has. This fact becomes even more disheartening when we learn that in the lead-up to “Double Exposure”, Chloe departs from Max, causing her significant pain.
Could it be that Chloe’s story is tainted by remorse over Arcadia Bay’s demise, or perhaps some other factor we’re unaware of? We can only speculate.
