As a passionate gamer who grew up with the vibrant world of Monster High, I can wholeheartedly endorse the newest addition to the franchise – Monster High: Skultimate Secrets. This game is not just a refreshing breath of fresh air but a much-needed leap forward in the gaming industry, catering to a demographic that has been largely overlooked for far too long: pre-teen girls like me!
In contrast to the limited number of genuinely tough games designed for younger females, Outright Games and Mattel are breaking new ground with the recently launched Monster High: Skultimate Secrets. This platformer offers an engaging experience for players regardless of their gender or age, but what sets it apart is its focus on a significant yet underrepresented sector in the gaming industry. It doesn’t just cater to the interests of prepubescent girls; it also provides them with a game that offers a meaningful challenge.
Destinee Cleveland, the narrative designer at Outright, and Miguel Ortiz de Urbina Díaz, an associate producer, recently discussed the intended audience of their game Monster High and how it caters to them in an interview with Game Rant. These characteristics make it a popular choice for a pre-teen girl gamer’s preferred holiday present.
The Skultimate Secrets to Reaching Girl Gamers
The storyline of “Monster High: Skultimate Secrets” is rooted in the latest third generation of “Monster High”, which has struck a chord with not just pre-teen girls, but also those who were fans during Mattel’s initial rollout of this popular brand, such as Díaz. Debuted in 2022, Generation Three has honed its appeal to that specific pre-teen girl demographic, while also striving to deliver a consistent “Monster High” experience across various media platforms, including films and games.
The Outright game significantly contributes to its continuous integration within Generation Three and broadens players’ comprehension of the main character, Monster High School. Cleveland, collaborating extensively with Mattel on the game’s characters and plotline, shared some insights into making the school more immersive:
There was limited online information available and a wealth of details to extract from the series, given its three generations. However, understanding their creative direction significantly enhanced my character development process, ensuring consistency with the series. I highly recommend watching the series and playing the game as it continues to embody Twyla and Draculaura, while offering an expansive open world for exploration, revealing aspects not shown in the show or other games.
Additionally, she suggested that certain enigmas within the storyline of Monster High might be resolved within the game, yet emphasized that players would need to experience it firsthand to uncover these secrets. Moreover, Mattel’s involvement went beyond just attention to detail; they aimed to bridge the gap between the primary audience of pre-teen girls and secondary audience of dedicated Monster High fans. Mattel, as explained by the pair, strongly values authentic representation. Since introducing career Barbies such as a game designer and Tomb Raider Barbie, they have made it a point to highlight the multifaceted experiences of young girls in their product lines. For example, Frankie from Monster High’s current generation identifies as genderfluid, while the player character in Skultimate Secrets has no defined gender.
Girl Gamers Want a Challenge
In many instances, video games created for young girls or adult women often revolve around low-risk scenarios, with popular genres being walkthrough simulations and fashion design. Although these types of games, as well as more relaxed ones, hold significant value within the gaming industry, labeling them exclusively as feminine overlooks the diverse interests of all gamers, including female gamers.
Diaz pointed out that the shift towards providing simpler games for girls has begun to reverse, and a significant part of this change can be attributed to “Monster High: Skultimate Secrets”. It’s not just about promoting gender equality that Outright is focusing on, but also solid data, as he clarified.
As a dedicated fan, I can confidently share my insights from our playtests, which reveal that girls crave a challenging gaming experience just as much as boys do. This is one of the key factors behind why we’ve crafted Monster High: Skulltimate Secrets into more than just a dress-up game.
Cleveland narrated personal tales corroborating those statistics, shedding light on why the Monster High market is underrepresented. It’s common sense that gaming girls are present, but as Díaz points out, women account for more than half of the market. However, opinions towards female gamers aren’t always encouraging.
Cleveland started a group called Dames for Games, which had their inaugural event last year to try to uplift women’s voices in the industry to counter the conception that gaming remains a masculine space. Mattel also wants to challenge that idea, so working with them to create a game that was very welcoming to young girls was something she jumped at.
I’m always promoting that
you should be seen, heard, and respected
in this industry because it’s truly important…I think, as we were growing up, there was this idea that games were kind of for boys and not so much for girls, but just statistically looking at it, girls are just as involved in playing games, wanting to be streamers, wanting to become developers, wanting to do all sorts of things that involve the gaming community. I think the reason why this was important is because we’re growing as an industry and we want to make sure that everyone is included as we’re moving towards the future, and that includes girls, that includes all genders, who want to see themselves represented in games.
The response to the game has been incredibly favorable, with only one minor criticism: some people wish it had lasted even longer, which they consider a positive problem to have. This overwhelmingly positive reception, following the game’s release in late October, suggests that a sequel might be in the cards, a prospect that both are keen on exploring.
Based on the positive feedback and its appeal to a niche market, Monster High: Skultimate Secrets is likely to be a top choice for the pre-teen girl’s most cherished holiday gift, given its potential.
