As a die-hard fan of Beastars who has been following this masterpiece since its inception, I must say that the upcoming final season is shaping up to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions and action. The unique blend of 3D animation and anthropomorphic characters has captivated me from the very beginning, and the depth and complexity of the storyline have kept me hooked ever since.

WARNING! The following contains spoilers for the Beastars anime and manga.

The Beastars anime has astonishingly achieved widespread popularity despite the fact that 3D animation is not traditionally well-liked. What sets Beastars apart from other 3D animations is its distinctive artistic style and character design, which have effectively avoided the usual drawbacks associated with this type of animation. Moreover, the use of anthropomorphic animal characters in the series has not discouraged many anime enthusiasts; since its debut, the manga and anime have received numerous nominations and awards. Initially, viewers were quick to dismiss the show as “furry-bait” when the trailer was released on Netflix. However, those who actually watched the series discovered the complexities of the characters and the world they inhabit, and came to appreciate the tense relationships and realistic, relatable characters within it.

As the final season approaches, fans are growing more and more eager, as the remaining storylines to be adapted contain numerous interconnected elements, and until now, the anime hasn’t fully explored Legoshi’s past. The latest trailer for season 3 hints at the incorporation of two manga arcs, including the climactic one, but it still leaves some crucial aspects unclear.

What Do You Need To Know Before Beastar's Final Season?

In the initial season, it was revealed that Legoshi played a crucial role in solving the murder mystery, and it turned out to be Riz who had inadvertently killed Tem. It was discovered later that this act was not deliberate; rather, Riz’s predatory nature overpowered him. Although they were friends, Riz never intended to harm Tem. However, he had been battling with the medication prescribed by the government to suppress his bear instincts. Believing he was close enough friends with Tem to resist his urges, Riz chose to stop taking his medication. Unfortunately, his instincts ultimately proved too strong, leading him to accidentally kill his best friend due to an uncontrollable attack caused by his predatory nature.

On New Year’s Eve, Legoshi finds himself battling against Riz. As the fight seems to slip away from him, Louis intervenes by letting Legoshi bite into his leg. This infusion of Riz’s strength, being a meat-eater, helps Legoshi finally emerge victorious in the battle. This incident marks the first time Legoshi has ever consumed meat, henceforth labeling him as a ‘predatorial offender’. Following this event, Riz is apprehended, while Legoshi is summoned for questioning. Louis, on the other hand, requires hospitalization. Despite the chaos that ensued, Legoshi and Louis are now considered friends. However, to avoid sharing the same destiny as Riz, Legoshi decides to withdraw from school.

What Do You Need To Know Before Beastar's Final Season?

In the upcoming last season, it’s anticipated that two distinct storylines from the manga will be featured. Given the prevalent practice of dividing anime seasons into two segments, this final season is planned to be divided into two parts as well. The initial segment is expected to explore the “Interspecies Relations” arc, while the latter half will mainly delve into the “Revenge of the Love Failure” arc, which serves as the concluding storyline in the manga. The contrasting nature and themes of these arcs make for an intriguing prospect, as it remains to be seen how the creators manage to maintain a steady pace when adapting them into the final season.

The “Interspecies Relations” storyline offers a more profound glimpse into the universe of the “Beastars” series. It provides brief insights into the lives of minor characters, but it also allows us to witness Legoshi navigating the world beyond his old school’s boundaries, dealing with the challenges that arise from his new carnivorous diet. Additionally, we encounter Legoshi’s grandfather, a Komodo dragon, and learn about the interspecies relationship between him and Legoshi’s grandmother, who, like Legoshi, is a wolf.

“I’ll be fine. It’s always been like this. I’m used to being feared and hated. I’ll survive.”

In the “Love Failure Redux” segment, the narrative shifts from personal conflicts to intense action and drama. Here, we’re introduced to Melon, a complex antagonist who hails from the Shishigumi crime group of past seasons and is part of multiple species. Being a carnivore in the Beastars universe gives him an edge, as he’s stronger than most other characters. A proposition is put before Legoshi: if he assists in bringing down Melon, his criminal record could be wiped clean. This would enable Legoshi to re-enroll in school once more.

During a club altercation, Melon shot and severely injured Legoshi. After this incident, Legoshi fell into a coma and had a brief encounter with his mother’s spirit. Upon waking up, he reunited with Haru after a considerable period of time apart. These experiences fueled his determination to recover, defeat Melon, and clear his criminal record by accepting a deal. The story concludes as Melon, though defeated by Legoshi, escapes and can’t be located. Despite the world changing significantly during his absence, Legoshi manages to build a life with Haru. Although he achieves his goals, there are some bittersweet consequences due to their interspecies relationship in a partially segregated society, but for Legoshi, it’s a sacrifice he’s willing to make for Haru.

Some viewers found the conclusion to the storyline debatable, with some appreciating its more thrilling finish, but many expressing disappointment that Melon wasn’t defeated or killed by Legoshi in the manga. Since the anime has deviated from the source material in certain aspects during its adaptation, it remains uncertain whether the anime will stick to this ending or introduce an alternative one more in line with fans’ expectations for the Beastars manga.
