A new mobile game called Game of Thrones: Dragonfire is coming, and it’s connected to the House of the Dragon series. While House of the Dragon hasn’t reached the same popularity as the original Game of Thrones, it’s still been successful, making another game a logical step for Warner Bros. However, like previous titles, this game will only be available on mobile devices.
I enjoy mobile games and have played quite a few over the years. However, the world of Game of Thrones feels like it deserves a much bigger, more immersive experience. With its rich story and detailed universe, it would be a perfect fit for a large-scale, open-world RPG. It’s surprising that Warner Bros. hasn’t created one yet, as they clearly have all the necessary elements.
Game of Thrones Has Plenty of Mobile Games, So It’s Time for a Full-Blown RPG Experience
A List of Mobile Game of Thrones Games
- Game of Thrones Ascent
- Game of Thrones: Conquest
- Reigns: Game of Thrones
- Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming
- Game of Thrones: Slots Casino
- Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall
- Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows
- Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition
- Game of Thrones: Legends
- Game of Thrones: Kingsroad
While a few of these games are available on computers, they’re primarily designed for phones and tablets. There are already quite a few Game of Thrones mobile games out there, so it’s disappointing that the new release, Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, is also just for mobile. It seems like Game of Thrones will continue focusing on mobile gaming, which means a lot of opportunities for games on other platforms are being missed.

Given how rich the world of Game of Thrones is, it’s surprising we haven’t seen a large, open-world role-playing game based on it yet.
Telltale’s Game of Thrones was a fantastic game, but it’s largely been overlooked. When the second season was canceled, a truly impressive adaptation was left unfinished. Now, instead of being enjoyed as a complete game, it mainly serves as a reminder of lost potential. However, a new game on the horizon might finally get Game of Thrones video games back on track.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a Silver Lining, But It Still Isn’t Enough
It looks like Game of Thrones: War for Westeros might be a different kind of mobile game. Unlike many games on phones, this one is a full-fledged real-time strategy game also planned for PC. While it’s a good move, the game still isn’t fully utilizing everything the Game of Thrones universe has to offer. Currently, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is expected to launch in 2026, but a specific release date hasn’t been confirmed yet.
It’s unclear when the game will be released, but we hope it’s the start of a Game of Thrones video game that really feels like being part of that world. Mobile games often have limitations in terms of gameplay and graphics. Considering how popular the show has been, many of the games based on it haven’t lived up to expectations.
Interestingly, a game that feels very similar to the new Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, isn’t actually connected to the franchise. Last year’s Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a medieval adventure that shows there’s a real demand for a large-scale Game of Thrones role-playing game. A Game of Thrones game with the style of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 could be very successful, especially since Warner Bros. has already seen success with open-world RPGs based on other fantasy properties.
Game of Thrones Should Look to Hogwarts Legacy for Guidance
For years, fans dreamed of a game like Hogwarts Legacy, and in 2023, it became a huge success. With a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy planned and a new Harry Potter series coming, the franchise is set to grow even larger. It’s clear Warner Bros. and HBO are committed to expanding the Game of Thrones universe too, with the original books, the main series, House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms already providing plenty of content. Considering all this, an open-world Game of Thrones game similar in style to Hogwarts Legacy feels like a natural next step.
A role-playing game where you create a character and pledge loyalty to a house from Game of Thrones has the potential to be incredibly successful. While there’s no news yet on when the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy will be released, its reception will be key. If the sequel matches – or exceeds – the popularity of the first Hogwarts Legacy, it will demonstrate a clear opportunity for Warner Bros. Games to develop a Game of Thrones RPG.
Cyanide released a Game of Thrones role-playing game back in 2012, but it feels quite old now with how games have evolved.
Game of Thrones Can Hopefully Catch Up With Other Major Pop Culture Franchises
While still widely enjoyed, the Game of Thrones franchise isn’t as massive as it once was. The disappointing ending to the TV series caused some of its popularity to fade, but that doesn’t mean a video game adaptation wouldn’t be successful. Recent years have seen successful games based on huge franchises like Dune, Marvel, DC, and Star Wars. Even classics like Indiana Jones and James Bond are making a comeback in gaming. Given this trend, a Game of Thrones game seems like a promising idea.
Whether a large-scale, open-world RPG based on Game of Thrones will actually be made is still unknown. We can hope for one, but only time will tell. For now, fans can either wait to see if Game of Thrones: War for Westeros revives the franchise on mobile or enjoy the current spin-off series.
