The Best FPS Games Of The Last 10 Years

The last decade has been a strong period for shooter games, with both major releases and smaller independent titles keeping players entertained across platforms like Steam and PlayStation 5. While 2024 isn’t finished yet, there’s still potential for a truly groundbreaking game, something as impactful as the original Doom or Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Okay, so I’m going to run down some games that are just plain enjoyable. I’m not just looking at how good the shooting feels, though – I want to see what the whole game offers. Do they give you a massive world to wander around in, or let you play however you want? That’s what I’m checking for. Let’s dive in and see which ones really stand out!

Some honorable mentions go to GTFO, Trepang2, Resident Evil Requiem, and Metro Exodus.

10. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

It’s A New World

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus built on the already unique style of the 2014 game and delivered even more exciting gunplay. Players take on the role of B.J. Blazkowicz, continuing the fight against the Nazis in cities they’ve occupied around the world, with plenty of fast-paced shooting.

The game has a major, unexpected development involving B.J. early on – revealing too much would ruin the experience. However, the surprises and action sequences are truly spectacular. It’s a pity we haven’t seen another large-scale Wolfenstein game like this in years, but thankfully, this one remains enjoyable.

9. Doom Eternal

Shooting Demons In A Barrel

Doom Eternal builds on the fast-paced demon-slaying action of the 2016 Doom. It doubles down on combat, and brings back the finisher system – players need to defeat enemies in certain ways to get extra ammo and rewards.

Despite the fast-paced, action-packed gameplay, players need to manage their ammunition carefully. However, the guns themselves are incredibly powerful and feel fantastic to use, making dispatching demons both brutal and rewarding.

8. Neon White

A Speedrunner’s Dream

Neon White takes a little getting used to with its controls, but once you do, it’s incredibly addictive. You play as a demon hunter competing in Heaven, and each level challenges you to defeat enemies quickly while expertly navigating a parkour course of floating platforms.

Instead of directly using guns, players collect cards that unlock them—ranging from pistols to rifles. Each time you shoot an enemy, a card loses some of its uses. These cards also grant special abilities for movement, like grappling or double jumping, so players need to carefully balance using weapons and abilities. Neon White isn’t really a shooter; it’s more like a fast-paced race, and it’s incredibly exciting.

7. Borderlands 4

A Class Above

The best thing about Borderlands 4, and what really sets it apart in the shooting game world of the last ten years, is the variety of loot you can find. While not every weapon is amazing, there’s something for everyone – whether you like pistols that shoot fire or guns that explode when you throw them.

The open world and new vehicle, the Digi-Runner, were great additions to the Borderlands series. Plus, the variety of characters and classes let you customize your experience for fun solo or online gameplay.

6. Battlefield 1

Trench Warfare

Battlefield 1 uniquely transported players back to the challenging setting of World War 1. The game’s campaign was engaging, offering diverse experiences like intense trench warfare, horseback riding through towns, and desert defense missions.

DICE successfully transported players to the 1910s through its immersive sound design, whether they were playing the campaign or enjoying the various online multiplayer modes. The gunplay remains excellent, and the satisfyingly brutal melee attacks with trench shovels still feel great – making this a standout title in the Battlefield series.

5. Ultrakill

Complete Mayhem

Ultrakill delivers a classic shooter experience reminiscent of 90s games. It focuses on fast-paced action rather than a deep story or specific goals. Players experiment with a variety of weapons and abilities to achieve high scores through stylish and inventive kills – everything from shooting coins mid-air to launching missiles and taunting enemies is encouraged.

Ultrakill feels like a fast-paced, challenging game straight out of the 90s. It’s incredibly difficult, but landing a perfect run and getting a great score is incredibly rewarding.

4. Mullet Madjack

A Shooter With Style

Mullet Madjack is a quick and exciting cyberpunk shooter where you play through randomly generated levels. You’ll fight enemies by shooting, using melee attacks, or tricking them into environmental hazards like fans and electrical wires. It has a cool anime-inspired look.

The game rewards quick thinking and creativity. Players need to act fast, because a constantly monitored timer penalizes slow or repetitive actions. It runs smoothly on many different devices, features exciting combat, and stands out thanks to its strong anime inspiration, which is a real asset to the gaming world.

3. Cyberpunk 2077

Open-Ended Cyborgs

Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky start, but it’s now considered one of the best shooter and role-playing games of the last ten years. Players build a character and then enhance them with cybernetic modifications as they play.

Players can complete missions in a variety of ways thanks to different modifications and equipment, offering more freedom than many role-playing games. For those who enjoy action, the game features satisfying shooting mechanics and a wide range of weapons to use in every mission.

2. Titanfall 2

A Boy And His Bot

Titanfall 2 is a fantastic game that doesn’t get enough recognition, and it’s surprising we haven’t seen a follow-up. The gameplay focuses on skillful combat and fluid movement as you switch between playing as the pilot, Jack Cooper, and his powerful mech, BT.

Okay, so in Titanfall 2, you switch between playing as a pilot and controlling a Titan, depending on what the mission needs. Honestly, I found myself playing as the pilot, Jack, more often than the Titan, BT, and that’s totally cool with me. Every time I did get to climb into a Titan felt amazing, like a special reward. The graphics are stunning, the story about the connection between Jack and BT is genuinely moving, and the shooting? Seriously, it’s some of the best I’ve ever experienced in a game. Titanfall 2 isn’t just a great game, it feels like a stroke of luck that it even exists.

1. Destiny 2

Bungie Does It Again

Since its release in 2017, Destiny 2 has experienced both successes and challenges. It’s evolved from a game you purchased upfront to a free-to-play experience with optional expansions. While a complete look back at its ten-year history would be extensive, Destiny 2, considered as a game rather than a constant commitment, demonstrates why Bungie is so highly regarded as a developer.

Destiny 2 boasts stunning and imaginative environments, with extensive character customization and a huge arsenal of weapons. The game is incredibly smooth to control, and players have enjoyed a wide variety of experiences, whether playing alone, with friends, or in large-scale raids and multiplayer battles.
