It’s intended to be the new central platform for competitive Pokemon battling, which could be great in the future. However, the game’s current condition, particularly the limited choices for recruits and available items, is holding it back. The basic elements for a strong competitive game are present, but it will likely take time for the game to fully develop. As a fan, it’s honestly getting a little stale seeing the same teams over and over! Right now, Mega Charizard Y and Venusaur are just everywhere on the ladder. It makes sense, though – Mega Charizard Y brings the sun with its ability, Drought, and then Venusaur, with Chlorophyll, gets super speedy and can sweep or put things to sleep. Some people try switching things up, using Whimsicott for quick speed boosts with Tailwind, or Torkoal to set up the sun instead, but honestly, Venusaur is a top-tier Grass-type and Mega Charizard Y is one of the best Fire-types, so it’s hard to beat that core!

While sun teams are common, rain is another viable strategy, though less frequently used. Successful rain teams in Pokemon Champions often center around Pelipper, Archaludon, and Basculegion. Pelipper’s Drizzle ability creates rain, Archaludon can quickly attack with boosted Electric-type moves, and Basculegion is a powerful attacker with strong Water-type moves that become even stronger in the rain. Mega Meganium is also a good fit, as rain weakens Fire-type attacks, and its Mega Sol ability lets it use powerful Solar Beam and Weather Ball attacks even without sunlight.
