Becoming Pirate King in One Piece is a huge challenge, even for Luffy. Just saying you want the title isn’t enough – you need the strength, resources, and reputation to be taken seriously as a potential successor to Gol D. Roger.
Even though fans are eager to find out who will become the next Pirate King in One Piece, the author, Eiichiro Oda, isn’t quite ready to reveal the successor. Luffy is currently the most likely candidate, but other characters could still rise to claim the title before the series ends.
Buggy

Despite his flaws, Buggy remains incredibly popular with fans, and many now believe he has a real chance of becoming the next Pirate King – even more so than Luffy. While his devil fruit ability isn’t particularly strong, his large and dedicated fanbase, combined with his incredible luck, strong personality, and knack for unexpectedly succeeding, make him a serious contender to take Gol D. Roger’s place.
Blackbeard
Characters with immense ambition, like Luffy and Blackbeard, won’t let any danger or powerful opponent stand in their way as long as they relentlessly pursue their goals. Their drive only ends with their lives, meaning nothing can truly stop them from achieving what they set out to do, no matter the challenges they face.
It’s still unknown what Blackbeard truly wants, but he clearly has everything it takes to become Pirate King before anyone else. He’s incredibly powerful, with the abilities from two Devil Fruits, a strong crew, and mastery of both Armament and Observation Haki. This combination gives him the strength and influence to achieve the seemingly impossible goal of becoming Pirate King – a title many, like Luffy, desperately seek.
Shanks
Red-Haired Shanks now wants to find the One Piece himself, which unexpectedly puts him in competition with Luffy. He and his crew have already set sail, determined to find the treasure before anyone else. Finding the One Piece is now a major goal for them, and Shanks appears ready to do whatever it takes to achieve it.
Shanks has always been an enigma in the story. Even the World Government avoids crossing him, and incredibly powerful pirates like Whitebeard and Mihawk recognize just how strong he is. Despite his cheerful demeanor, he’s a force to be reckoned with – when Shanks wants something, he always gets it.

Usopp
Fans have also nominated Usopp, the courageous warrior from Syrup Village, as a potential rival to Luffy in the race to become Pirate King. Although he isn’t as physically strong as Luffy or others on the list, Usopp’s courage, strong will, and big dreams show that anyone can become a legend.
I’ve always found it endearing how Usopp constantly boasts about his abilities, always measuring himself against Luffy and the rest of the crew. He’s determined to prove that even someone from a small island like him can hang with the best. He might not have the same grand dreams of becoming Pirate King as Luffy, but I definitely wouldn’t count him out as a potential contender.
Eustass Kid
It’s disappointing to see Eustass Kid go from defeating a powerful opponent like Big Mom in Wano to being so decisively defeated by Shanks near Elbaph. While his fate is currently unknown – we don’t know if he’s dead or alive – the author, Oda, often uses fake-out deaths, so it’s probable Kid survived Shanks’ attack, even though the area was completely destroyed.
Many fans still believe Kid is alive and hope he’ll recover and continue his quest to become the next Pirate King. Despite losing to Shanks, he’s a powerful pirate with mastery of all three types of Haki, which makes a return to the story quite possible.
Crocodile
Everyone remembers Crocodile and his plans in Alabasta. Once, he dreamed of being Pirate King, but losing to Whitebeard and Luffy made him rethink things. He decided to pursue power in a quieter, more reliable way instead.
Crocodile hasn’t lost his strong personality, so he might decide to compete for the title of Pirate King once more, particularly now that Buggy has announced his own ambition to win.
