The first Dragon Ball series gave us iconic scenes and introduced Goku, who quickly became a fan favorite in the anime world. However, the show truly evolved into what we know and love today when it transitioned into Dragon Ball Z.

The series took a huge turn when Raditz arrived on Earth. Suddenly, the villains were far more powerful, and the story expanded from focusing just on Earth to the entire universe – a trend that continued in later installments like Dragon Ball Super. Dragon Ball Z is a beloved show for many, and while each story arc has its highlights, let’s compare them all to see how they stack up.

Buu Saga

The Buu Saga, which concludes the original Dragon Ball Z series, is often the most debated among fans. While it delivered some incredible fights and introduced memorable characters, it also felt uneven and drawn-out at times. Many viewers also believe this saga marked a turning point where Gohan, who had been positioned as the next generation’s hero after the Cell Games, began to lose focus and potential.

The Buu Saga is the most action-filled arc in the series, featuring storylines like the Great Saiyaman, the World Tournament, the Babidi Saga, Majin Buu, Fusion, Kid Buu, and a peaceful world. It also includes the Other World Saga, which is exclusive to the anime. While it has some memorable moments and provided significant character development for Vegeta, ultimately it doesn’t quite reach the same level as other arcs in the series.

Gods of the Universe Saga

The anime adaptations of these story arcs are connected to Dragon Ball Super, but Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’ are officially Dragon Ball Z movies. This technically makes them the last part of the original Dragon Ball Z series, even though they were released many years later. These movies acted as a lead-in to Super, and their stories were later used as the first two arcs of the anime. However, the movie versions and the anime adaptations were quite different in quality.

Fans loved both movies as strong additions to the series, raising the challenges and pushing Goku and Vegeta further than ever before. While ‘Battle of Gods’ changed some details about Planet Vegeta’s destruction which disappointed some viewers, Beerus and Whis were generally popular characters. Reviving Frieza proved to be a smart decision and continues to influence the story. The second film wasn’t quite as good as the first, but it still pleased fans and almost gave Vegeta a satisfying win against Frieza, before the story predictably focused the victory on Goku.

Saiyan Saga

The Saiyan Saga was the first major arc in Dragon Ball Z and really shook things up for the series. While it might seem mild compared to later sagas, it’s still a great and memorable story. It finally explained Goku’s origins, revealing he was part of a powerful warrior race, the Saiyans, who were vastly different and much more ruthless than he was.

Looking back at the Saiyan Saga, it really delivered some unexpected twists. While deaths in Dragon Ball aren’t always as devastating as in other shows, seeing characters like Tien, Chiaotzu, Yamcha, Piccolo, and even Goku fall in battle was pretty shocking back then. That saga also gave us our first glimpse of Gohan, and we saw a lot of growth in Piccolo’s character. Plus, the fight between Goku and Vegeta was one of the most intense I’ve ever seen! Vegeta went on to become a huge part of the Dragon Ball universe, but that first impression he made during the Saiyan Saga definitely stuck with fans – myself included.

Frieza Saga

The Frieza Saga is often considered the peak of the Dragon Ball series, and it’s not hard to see why. It featured the most famous Dragon Ball villain, Frieza, along with a host of challenging and unforgettable enemies. The saga also returned to the original spirit of the series with a dangerous quest for the Dragon Balls – this time, across the galaxy. Most importantly, it fundamentally changed Dragon Ball forever by introducing the legendary Super Saiyan transformation.

The Frieza Saga featured standout performances from characters like Gohan, Piccolo, and Krillin, and offered a more in-depth look at Vegeta’s backstory. The battles against Frieza and his forces on Namek were incredibly exciting, and learning about Piccolo’s alien origins – so soon after discovering Goku’s – added a lot of depth to his character. However, the highlight of the saga is undoubtedly Goku becoming a Super Saiyan. This transformation, hinted at throughout the story, proved to be the most iconic moment in the series, fundamentally changing it and influencing many subsequent stories.

Cell Saga

The Cell Saga took some time to really get going, introducing a few villains that didn’t quite hit the mark before the famous Bio-Android appeared. Dr. Gero and Android 19 felt more like minor enemies, and while Androids 17 and 18 were threatening, they didn’t have the same terrifying impact as they would later. Cell, however, was a game changer. Even in his initial form, he was frightening, resembling a monster from a horror film. He was also clever, constantly absorbing others to grow stronger and prove himself a difficult opponent.

The Cell Saga was a turning point for Dragon Ball, introducing Future Trunks and a much darker, more desperate future than fans were used to. The saga is best remembered for Goku’s heroic sacrifice and Gohan reaching Super Saiyan 2, making him the strongest character yet and stepping up to protect Earth. It was a powerful and satisfying conclusion that could have been a perfect ending to the series. While the Buu Saga also provided a good ending, finishing Dragon Ball after the Cell Saga would have been an incredibly impactful way to conclude the story.
