Open-World Games Are Coming To PS5 Very Soon

So far, 2026 has been a great year for open-world games on the PlayStation 5. Popular titles like Crimson Desert and smaller games such as Ys 10: Proud Nordics have kept players busy. And there’s even more to look forward to later in the year, with highly anticipated releases like Grand Theft Auto 6 and The Blood of Dawnwalker.

While we wait for those big game releases, there are still some exciting open-world games on the horizon. Whether you’re looking for a massive role-playing adventure or just a fresh world to explore, the upcoming games offer a great mix of well-known series and brand new experiences.

LEGO Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight

A Nice Set Of Friends And Bat Family Members

Get ready to become the Dark Knight! LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight arrives on PlayStation on May 22, 2026. This action-adventure game tells the story of Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman. You’ll start as a young Bruce, learning from the League of Shadows, teaming up with allies, and battling Batman’s most famous enemies throughout Gotham City.

LEGO Batman feels like a blend of previous LEGO games and the more recent Batman: Arkham series. Though it’s been a while since a new Arkham game came out, LEGO Batman’s gameplay – particularly the action and combat – strongly resembles those titles. It also shares a similar balance between action-packed moments and puzzle-solving.

However, there are a few differences planned for LEGO Batman. It will feature seven playable characters – Batman, Jim Gordon, Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul. This is a smaller roster than most LEGO games, but more than the Arkham series offered. Plus, the game will include local multiplayer, letting you team up with a friend or family member to fight crime.

Every character you play will have special abilities and tools, making each one feel different. You’ll also be able to customize the Batcave with your favorite vehicles and suits, giving it a personal touch. It seems like a really fun game that builds on the popular gameplay of the Arkham and LEGO series.

Outbound

Take To The Road To Build A New Life

Looking for a relaxing game? Outbound lets you explore a beautiful, open world and create your perfect camper van home. Set in a hopeful vision of the near future, you’ll start with a bare van and travel across diverse landscapes, improving it as you go. And just like a real road trip, it’s even more fun with friends – the game supports up to four players in co-op.

Okay, so on this journey, I can totally trick out my ride and make it my own. I can also grow my own food and try to live off the land, which is cool. There’s a whole crafting system where I gather stuff to make tools and even build things like bridges – pretty neat! But if I just want to explore, there are tons of landmarks to discover, and I can even get a pet to hang out with me. It’s a really open-ended experience.

In Outbound, you have a lot of freedom to explore and aren’t tied down by the usual problems of society. You can travel anywhere and however you like. You will encounter some challenges – things like fallen trees, car breakdowns, and needing to fix buildings – but the game focuses on a relaxed, open-world experience. Outbound comes to PlayStation 5 on April 23, 2026.

Wandering Sword

Harness Your Qi And Master Your Weapon To Find Peace

The open-world RPG Wandering Sword is coming to PlayStation 5 on May 5, 2026. It was first released on Steam for Windows on September 15, 2023. The game tells the story of Yuwen Yi, a swordsman caught in a conflict between rival groups—the Tianlong Gang and the Xuanhuo Cult—and left for dead.

Yi is rescued and begins training with Jiang, a skilled martial arts teacher, learning to harness his inner energy, or Qi. But their peaceful training is cut short when the village is attacked, forcing Yi to embark on a journey to master martial arts and defeat the forces threatening the land.

The game’s beautiful HD-2D pixel art really makes the world and story come alive. Battles in Wandering Sword use a classic ATB system, but take place on a grid, creating a unique blend of fast-paced action and strategic thinking. You can also customize the main character, Yi, by equipping different weapons, letting you tailor your combat style to your preferences.

Wandering Sword offers a fantastic experience with a diverse cast of characters and plenty of locations to explore. The PlayStation 5 version comes with all previously released downloadable content. If you enjoy turn-based RPGs, Wuxia-inspired games, or are simply intrigued by the game’s style, it’s definitely worth playing.

Echoes Of Aincrad

This World Holds Both Serenity And Secrets

Launching on July 9, 2026, Echoes of Aincrad lets you create your own adventure in the world of Sword Art Online. This game differs from previous Sword Art Online titles by allowing extensive character customization – you can choose your character’s appearance, equipment, skills, and even team up with specific partners to create powerful combinations.

The combat in this game is much more strategic and demanding than in previous Sword Art Online titles, which often relied on simply pressing buttons repeatedly. Players need to time their blocks carefully and manage their stamina alongside their health to succeed. With different playstyles and character builds available, there are many ways to overcome the challenges presented in these carefully designed battles.

While the game has a more measured pace, it’s definitely not boring. Echoes of Aincrad still features exciting combat with impressive-looking weapons and spells. The game world is beautiful too, offering stunning views of forests, plains, and lively towns. You’ll be able to explore both the open world and darker areas like dungeons and caves in search of treasure.

Early signs suggest Echoes of Aincrad will be a fantastic open-world game set in the Sword Art Online universe, offering plenty of exploration and strong RPG gameplay. It’s hoped the game will stand out from other Sword Art Online RPGs and provide an enjoyable experience for both longtime fans and new players.

Gothic 1 Remake

Escape From The Valley Of Mines

The Gothic 1 Remake, launching on June 5, 2026, revives the beloved 2001 RPG that helped shape the European role-playing game scene. Players will once again explore the Valley of Mines on the island of Khorinis, a vast prison camp trapped under a magical barrier, where convicts are forced to mine resources for the King’s army.

You start the game as a new, unnamed prisoner thrown into a dangerous and brutal prison environment. After a short introduction, you’ll pick a camp to join – the Old Camp, the New Camp, or the Swamp Camp. Your choice affects the missions you can take on and how your character grows and changes throughout the game.

One of the things that made the original Gothic game stand out was how its characters reacted to you. At first, they’d likely dismiss you as unimportant, but as you progressed, your choices and skills could make them fear or avoid you. Every character had their own daily life, and you could always find a way to interact with them. From what we’ve seen, the remake is trying to recapture this, making the characters a key part of what makes the prison colony feel so alive and engaging.

The world of Gothic 1 Remake is intentionally dark, brutal, and features problematic treatment of women, and the developers aren’t altering these core elements. While the remake will explore these harsh realities, it doesn’t approve of them. Instead, Gothic aims to show a world where these issues are left unaddressed and the damaging consequences that creates for its inhabitants. Female characters will receive more in-depth development than in the original game, but the setting itself will remain unchanged.
