Riot Games Will Now Ban Content Creators Engaing in “Off-Platform Content”

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I welcome Riot Games’ Terms of Service update with open arms. It’s about time we create a safer and more welcoming environment for all players, especially those who just want to enjoy their games without encountering toxicity or harassment.

As an enthusiastic supporter, I’m excited to share that Riot Games is revising their Terms of Service. This update now includes consequences for players who violate these terms not just within the game, but also in other contexts too.

Riot Games, developers of both League of Legends and Valorant, assert that these updates are essential to creating an optimal environment for gamers and content creators within their game communities.

The most significant modification Riot Games has made concerns their “Off-Platform behavior” policy. According to a recent blog post, Riot is taking steps to tackle harmful actions that players encounter in any areas related to their gaming experience. This update in the policy pertains only to content where Riot’s games are running in the foreground. For example, if someone uses offensive language while streaming Valorant, they can still face penalties, regardless of whether the hate speech was directed at in-game communications or chat interactions.

Riot Games strives to make their games enjoyable for all players. However, there can be individuals who behave badly. In such cases, we aim to prevent these individuals from transferring their negative behavior to other Riot games and causing further harm. Therefore, while severe infractions are rare, they won’t result in a ban across all Riot games within our penalty system.

Should you violate the Terms of Service during your playtime in Valorant, it means you will be barred from League of Legends and all other games developed by Riot Games as well.

The Riot Games Terms of Service Update Also Addresses Banned Services and Practices

Furthermore, Riot Games aims to tackle numerous services regularly violating their policies. Creators endorsed by platforms offering account boosting, selling/buying accounts, or prohibited in-game activities will face penalties.

This includes talking about it in streams, videos, TikToks, social media posts, you name it. If you’re even casually suggesting your audience to engage in these practices, Riot will act accordingly.

Riot explains that they employ a combination of manual and automated moderation methods to maintain their platform. They strive to address harmful content preemptively, ensuring that any penalties aren’t the result of false alarms. The company is committed to fostering a thriving community for its users by taking all necessary steps.

The company is giving content creators until January 3rd, 2025 before the updates go into effect.
