The Pokemon series has had a whirlwind of a year so far in 2026. As Pokemon celebrates its 30th anniversary, the creators are releasing a lot of new games for fans. Several Pokemon titles have already come out on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 this year, and they’ve received very different reactions from both critics and players.
Pokemon’s 2026 Releases
- Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (Nintendo Switch) — February 27
- Pokemon Pokopia (Nintendo Switch 2) — March 5
- Pokemon Champions (Nintendo Switch) — April 2
Beyond bringing the classic Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen to the Nintendo Switch, this year has seen the release of two new Pokemon games: the relaxing life-simulation and crafting game Pokemon Pokopia, and the strategic battle simulator Pokemon Champions. While fans still have to wait until 2027 for the next main series games, Pokemon Winds and Waves, this year has offered plenty to enjoy. However, the two new releases haven’t been equally well-received, with Pokemon Pokopia and Pokemon Champions seeing vastly different reactions – a pattern that feels similar to the mixed reception of Pokemon games released in 2021 and 2022.
Pokemon Swung from One of the Best to One of the Worst Games in the Series in 2026
Man, the two big Pokemon games that came out in 2026 were total opposites in how people reacted. When Pokopia was announced way back in September 2025, it seemed kinda weird, but in a good way – people were curious. Pokemon Champions, though? Everyone expected it to be the game for serious competitive battling. But honestly, after they both launched, things flipped. It’s really strange to see such different reactions, especially for a Pokemon game – it’s not something you usually see!
Pokemon Pokopia Set a Franchise Record
With scores of 89 on Metacritic and 90 on OpenCritic, Pokemon Pokopia is currently considered the best Pokemon game ever made. The idea of playing as a Ditto and restoring a world without people might seem odd, but Pokopia lets players build almost anything they can think of. This has led to some amazing creations, like a perfect recreation of Ash Ketchum’s house and even a virtual Taco Bell!
Beyond just offering creative building tools, Pokopia builds on the gameplay of Animal Crossing: New Horizons by significantly expanding customization and character collection. While Animal Crossing lets you search for favorite villagers to fill a limited number of homes on your island, Pokopia features over 300 unique creatures you can recruit to live in your town – all at the same time! This creates a deep and extensive collection system.
Pokemon Champions Leaves a Lot to Be Desired
Only a few weeks after Pokopia raised the bar for the series, Pokemon Champions received a lot of criticism from both regular and competitive players. Compared to Pokopia, which was full of features, Champions feels very basic, lacking important competitive elements and offering a limited selection of Pokemon. These issues, along with the game’s poor performance even on the Switch 2, have resulted in some of the lowest review scores ever for a Pokemon game – currently at 64 on Metacritic and 60 on OpenCritic.
The mobile game Pokemon Champions is scheduled to release in June 2026, with plans to regularly add new Pokemon and items after launch.
Pokemon’s 2026 Release Whiplash is a Lot Like the 2021-2022 Era
The Pokémon series has seen its share of games that fans didn’t love, but the drastic difference in quality between Pokopia and Champions is unusual. The last time Pokémon releases were so different was in 2022. Pokémon Legends: Arceus became a surprising hit with fans after the disappointing launch of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Like now, that period felt like a sudden shift – going from one of the lowest-rated Pokémon games to the beginning of a popular new series in just a few months.
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Were Largely Disliked at Launch
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were updated versions of the original Pokémon Diamond and Pearl games for the Nintendo Switch, making them the fifth remake in the Pokémon series. Though many fans were excited for these remakes, they were criticized for staying too close to the originals. Specifically, they kept the limited selection of Pokémon available in the original Diamond and Pearl, a feature that was later expanded in Pokémon Platinum. On top of that, the remakes always shared experience points, and the final battles with the Elite Four and Champion Cynthia were much more difficult than the rest of the game. Poor performance on the Switch further hurt the reception of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, ultimately making them a disappointing entry in the Pokémon franchise.
Both Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl received generally positive reviews, with scores of 73 on Metacritic and 74 on OpenCritic.
Pokemon Legends: Arceus Was the Refresh the Series Needed After BDSP
Just months after Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl brought players back to the Sinnoh region, Pokemon Legends: Arceus offered a fresh take, transporting them 100 years into the past to a time known as Hisui. This game was a bold step for the series, moving away from the usual Pokemon League challenge to tell a new story about the origins of the Pokedex. Unlike previous games, Pokemon Legends: Arceus let players catch Pokemon in real-time, giving it a more action-packed, RPG-like feel. Many fans felt it was a welcome change from BDSP, and the game received very positive reviews, earning scores of 83 on both Metacritic and OpenCritic and ultimately leading to the development of Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

The difference in quality between the upcoming 2026 Pokémon releases is significant, but there’s still a chance for Pokémon Champions to improve. As a game that’s constantly updated, Pokémon Champions will likely get better over time with the addition of more Pokémon and items, making the game more complete. Because Champions focuses on online player-versus-player battles instead of a traditional story, the tools and options available in those battles will be crucial for keeping players engaged and the game popular.
