A new Pokémon fan-made game, called Pokémon Sunset, lets you catch hundreds of different Pokémon in a region based on Greece. The game has a classic Pokémon feel but includes lots of fresh, new features.
As a long-time Pokémon player, I’ve seen some incredible fan-made ROM hacks over the years – people really love taking the classic games and seeing how much they can change! A lot of them add stuff from the newer games, like all the Pokémon we’ve gotten recently, or even the Fairy-type, to breathe new life into the older titles. Some are huge projects, completely adding new regions to play through – hacks like Pokémon Unbound and Prism are super popular for that. Now, there’s a new one coming out that’s really exciting! It’s based on Greece, and it’s not just a new region, but also introduces a cool new mechanic that gives a ton of the original Pokémon different forms. It’s looking like a really ambitious and awesome project!
Pokemon Sunset Is A New ROM Hack in a Brand-New Region
The new Pokemon Sunset ROM hack takes players to the Ilios region for a mysterious adventure. The game’s title hints at a key part of the story: the region is trapped in an endless sunset. You can expect to encounter around 350-400 Pokemon, including unique “sunset forms” that change their types. The developer is focusing on classic gameplay, without introducing any entirely new Pokemon (‘Fakemon’) beyond these forms, and keeps features like the physical/special split and level caps as they were in the original game. To play Pokemon Sunset, you’ll need a Pokemon LeafGreen ROM version 1.1, which can be found through the creator’s Reddit post.
Fans are really enjoying Pokemon Sunset, as evidenced by the positive response to a recent Reddit post. Many are praising the game’s unique sprites and the beautiful sunset color scheme. Players also appreciate that Pokemon Sunset lets you find Pokemon from the Johto region much earlier in the game than you normally could in FireRed and LeafGreen.
To celebrate 30 years of Pokémon, the classic Kanto remakes, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, were re-released on February 27th. Game Freak and The Pokémon Company made the games available for the first time outside of the Game Boy Advance, and there’s speculation they might do the same for the Hoenn region games in the future.
