In the anime Re:Zero, Subaru Natsuki finds himself transported to another world, but his new life isn’t easy. He repeatedly dies in horrible ways, only to be revived at a previous point in time thanks to a special ability called Return by Death. This unique power lets him essentially reset time, giving him a chance to change events and avoid disaster.

Reinhard Accidentally Cuts Subaru in Half
Reinhard is a close friend of Subaru in Re:Zero and is known throughout the series as an incredibly powerful fighter – he’s currently the Sword Saint of Lugunica. When Subaru needs assistance, Reinhard willingly steps in to handle threats, like Sirius, on his own.
Reinhard’s brave rescue attempt quickly turned tragic, resulting in Subaru’s death. With a single strike, Reinhard cut through Sirius, but her ability allowed her to transfer the injury to everyone nearby, including Subaru. As Subaru’s body fell, Reinhard was left stunned and devastated by the unexpected outcome.
Subaru Bleeds to Death
Many anime characters want to spend their last moments with those they care about, but Subaru, from Re:Zero Season 2, actually doesn’t want to remember his final moments with Emilia. He’d always imagined peacefully resting in her arms when he died, but the reality of how it happened was far worse than he ever feared.
Badly wounded by the Great Rabbit, Subaru collapses into Emilia’s arms, losing consciousness from his injuries. But this isn’t the Emilia he knows – she’s lost her mind, and what should be a tender, comforting moment quickly becomes terrifying for Subaru.
Elsa Disembowels Subaru
Subaru’s first death in Re:Zero Season 1 isn’t particularly gruesome, but it’s deeply unsettling. The fear comes from not knowing why he’s dying, and the heartbreaking thought that his life wasn’t special. He was simply trying to help Emilia recover a lost item when he unexpectedly died in this new world, a place he hoped would give him a fresh start.
To make things even worse, Subaru also had to watch Emilia die. His attempt to help her turned into a terrifying experience he couldn’t escape. And, even though he expected it, Elsa still managed to cut him in the stomach again.
Puck Decapitates Subaru
Puck generally gets along well with Subaru, and they enjoy spending time together like old friends. But when it comes to Emilia’s safety, Puck’s playful personality disappears. He becomes cold and intimidating, even frightening Subaru with his fierce protectiveness.
In Season 1 of Re:Zero, Puck reacts to Emilia’s death by blaming Subaru, immediately freezing and then killing him. Though the death is swift, the heartbreaking scene of Subaru crying while holding Rem emphasizes his helplessness – he knows he’s powerless to change what happened and will simply die again.

Rem Tortures Subaru and Ends His Life
Subaru had to experience death twice right in front of Rem before she fully trusted and remained loyal to him, both times occurring within the terrifying Mathers mansion. He first died in his sleep, then again while wandering the mansion’s halls. However, his third death was even more heartbreaking, happening after he discovered what he believed was Rem’s betrayal.
Holding a mace, Rem harshly questioned Subaru, demanding to know if he was a spy working to take the throne. Her relentless and violent interrogation overwhelmed Subaru, reducing him to tears as he desperately tried to prove his innocence. He felt utterly defeated, knowing he couldn’t change Rem’s mind. Finally, Rem quickly ended his life, believing she was ending his pain.
Sirius Hangs Subaru
Subaru suffers another devastating defeat, this time at the hands of Sirius, a powerful Sin Archbishop who embodies Wrath. Sirius has a dangerous ability: she can link people together, sharing their feelings, senses, and even physical injuries. Subaru previously felt the full force of this when Sirius connected him with Lusbel inside the watchtower, resulting in severe harm.
Sirius swiftly bound Subaru with a chain, creating a link between their fears. This connection meant that any physical pain Subaru suffered, Lusbel also felt. Sirius then hanged Subaru, who choked for air as panic overwhelmed him. Simultaneously, Lusbel was consumed by intense fear and shock, dying alongside Subaru.
The Great Rabbit Devours Subaru Alive
Rabbits are generally seen as adorable, but the rabbits in the anime Re:Zero are dangerous predators. They have a huge appetite and will eat anything they find. Despite appearing harmless, a large group of these rabbits can completely devour their target, leaving nothing behind. If you encounter them, it’s best to avoid them – and running away might not even be enough.
In Season 2 of Re:Zero, Subaru faces a terrifying ordeal: he’s attacked by a seemingly harmless group of rabbits that quickly turn vicious. They relentlessly devour him while he’s fully aware and unable to defend himself. The scene is incredibly disturbing, showing the rabbits slowly consuming his body, piece by piece.
