The anime Demon Slayer features intense battles against demons that require incredible swordsmanship and physical power. Unlike many other fantasy anime, characters don’t rely on supernatural abilities like Quirks or jutsu; they depend entirely on their skill with a blade. That’s why all demon slayers, especially the elite Hashira, undergo rigorous training to master specialized techniques called breathing styles. These styles involve unique and powerful slashing and thrusting patterns.
Throughout the Demon Slayer anime, the Hashira increasingly relied on their most powerful techniques when facing demons – not just the weaker ones, but also Muzan’s strongest minions, the Upper Moons. Characters like Gyomei Himejima and Kyojuro understood that holding back wasn’t an option against such formidable foes. These elite demon slayers needed to unleash their full potential, and many also possessed a versatile technique that could enhance any of their breathing styles, giving them a better chance in battle.
Love Breathing, Fifth Form: Swaying Love, Wildclaw
Mitsuri Needed This to Fight Zohakuten in a Duel
I’ve always been struck by Mitsuri Kanroji in Demon Slayer. Despite her cheerful and sometimes clumsy nature, and even when she’s feeling stressed or mortified, she’s incredibly strong. She’s truly one of the best female swordspeople in anime, a result of her surprisingly powerful physique and her skill with Love Breathing. During her fight with the Upper Moon 4, Hantengu, she showcased a lot of impressive moves, but her fifth form of Love Breathing really stood out to me.
Mitsuri’s ‘Swaying Love, Wildclaw’ attack is devastating. When she uses it against an enemy like Hantengu, her flexible, whip-like sword moves with incredible power, completely overwhelming them. The technique also shows off her amazing agility – she leaps into the air and flips before striking. Even Hantengu’s strongest form, Zohakuten, struggles to defend against it.
Wind Breathing, Ninth Form: Idaten Typhoon is the Ultimate Air-Based Attack
This Technique is Strong Enough to Challenge Muzan in Battle
Sanemi Shinazugawa, known as the Wind Hashira, fights with powerful, sweeping attacks that create blasts of air. This makes him an excellent long-range fighter, comparable to Mitsuri and her unique sword. Although Sanemi was a strong fighter throughout Demon Slayer, he truly reached his full potential during the Infinity Castle Arc.
Sanemi finally started demonstrating his strength with powerful Wind Breathing techniques, enhanced by his Demon Slayer Mark. He particularly impressed fans when he used his ninth form, Idaten Typhoon, against Muzan Kibutsuji. While it didn’t defeat Muzan outright, the attack severely damaged his hand and forced the demon king to retreat – a significant achievement.
Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag is Shinobu’s Fastest and Most Ferocious Technique
Even Doma Was Impressed When He Saw It
I’ve always been fascinated by Shinobu Kocho! She was a bit smaller and not as physically strong as the other Hashira, but honestly, that’s what made her so unique. She totally excelled as the Demon Slayer Corps’ resident poison expert, using incredibly powerful toxins to take down demons that were way bigger and stronger than her. It’s amazing to think she almost defeated Upper Moon 2, Doma, with her poisons, even though sadly she didn’t get to see the final result. It just shows how brilliant and resourceful she was!

Shinobu’s most powerful technique is called Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag, and she demonstrated its incredible force even against Doma. When she uses this move, she’s at her quickest and most relentless, unleashing surprising destructive power. What makes it truly effective is its unpredictable, incredibly fast motion, making it very difficult for opponents to follow her, giving her a significant edge in battle.
Stone Breathing, Fifth Form: Arcs of Justice is Reserved For When Gyomei Gets Serious
Gyomei Employed His Fifth Form Against Kokushibo
Gyomei Himejima is widely considered the strongest of the Hashira, and his fighting techniques are incredibly powerful. He uses a unique weapon – a spiked ball attached to a chain – along with his immense strength and special Stone Breathing style to defeat demons in unpredictable ways.
This includes powerful techniques like Arcs of Justice, the strongest form of Stone Breathing. Gyomei used this move during his fight with Kokushibo, the Upper Moon 1, in the Demon Slayer manga. While it wasn’t enough to win on its own, Gyomei clearly had a good reason for using his most powerful technique against such a strong opponent.
Flame Breathing, Ninth Form: Rengoku Almost Took Akaza Down
This Was the Crown Jewel of the Mugen Train Movie
As a huge fan, I always think about how Mugen Train was the one and only time we got to see Rengoku unleash his incredible Flame Breathing against an Upper Rank Demon – Akaza! It was amazing watching him go all-out, using more and more different forms of the technique as the fight went on. Honestly, you could really feel how he was pushing himself to the absolute limit, relying on everything he knew to keep up with Akaza’s power. The more exhausted he got, the more those Flame Breathing forms became his lifeline, compensating for his dwindling strength. It was such a powerful and emotional battle!
The battle reached its peak when Kyojuro unleashed his most powerful attack – the Ninth Form of Flame Breathing, aptly named after himself. This all-out move nearly succeeded in defeating Akaza, but Akaza’s incredible resilience and a swift counterattack allowed him to survive until sunrise. Despite not securing a win, the Ninth Form impressed Demon Slayer fans, clearly demonstrating its immense power.
Repetitive Action Can Enhance Any Breathing Style
Any Hashira Might Double Their Power With Repetitive Action
Repetitive Action is arguably the strongest technique in Demon Slayer because it can be used with any existing Breathing Style to make it even more powerful. Normally, a demon slayer’s abilities are limited by the specific style they learn. But Repetitive Action acts like an additional fighting system, allowing for continued improvement and growth alongside their original Breathing Style.
Repetitive Action is a difficult technique, but characters like Genya and Tanjiro have proven it’s possible, suggesting even the strongest Demon Slayers, the Hashira, could potentially learn it. Along with abilities like the Demon Slayer Mark and Transparent World, Repetitive Action offers a way for any swordsman to overcome a demon’s immense power, regardless of their fighting style.
