The following article contains spoilers for Classroom of the Elite.
The anime Classroom of the Elite, also called Youjitsu, is currently streaming its fourth season. Though it hasn’t reached the same level of popularity as One Piece, it has consistently had a devoted fanbase since it first came out.
Even though this season takes place halfway through the story, it’s surprisingly easy for new viewers to pick up and enjoy. If you’re into mysteries, suspense, and psychological thrillers, this could be perfect for you. Let’s look at why it’s a great starting point, even if you’ve never seen the show before, and how Season 4 makes it so accessible.
Classroom of the Elite Has a Unique Premise
When you first start watching Classroom of the Elite, it might seem similar to other high school dramas like The Irregular at Magic High School or Ouran High School Host Club. However, it’s more closely aligned with the high-stakes world of Kakegurui. There’s definitely a competitive vibe, reminiscent of Danganronpa, but without the life-or-death consequences. The competition isn’t due to an outside force—it’s built into the school system, and students are constantly at risk of being expelled.
Stories often feature characters who have to work hard to succeed. However, Kiyotaka Ayanokoji is different. He was raised in a special, hidden school called “The White Room,” designed to cultivate exceptional talent by stripping away anything considered unnecessary from his education. As a result, Ayanokoji is exceptionally intelligent, though initially he struggles with social interactions and can be quite manipulative.

Currently a high school student at the Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing School – a school for exceptionally gifted students expected to become leaders – he intentionally keeps a low profile. Despite being incredibly intelligent, he’s placed in Class D, reserved for students considered underachievers, because he wants a normal school experience and to avoid standing out. Even though it’s the lowest-ranked class at such a prestigious school, his classmates are still above average. However, his personality is polarizing, and while he remains a popular character, a significant number of fans actually dislike him.
The series captivates viewers with the obstacles its characters face – whether through individual challenges that aren’t typical exams, or as a group, where the class earns points together. While primarily a suspenseful psychological thriller set in a high school environment, the show also realistically portrays the characters as relatable teenagers navigating the ups and downs of growing up and self-discovery.
What is Going on in the Original Novel?
The story centers on Ayanokoji’s time in school, broken down into arcs that cover each year. Each year brings new obstacles as the school environment evolves. The series is now in its final arc, focusing on his third year. Thanks to Horikita, Class D has risen to become Class A, but Ayanokoji has transferred to Class C. This is the first time he’ll be competing against his old classmates as a member of a rival class.
Previous years of Classroom of the Elite each had about 12 books, so the third year will probably be similar in length. So far, three books have come out in Japan. The first English digital version is available now, and the printed copy will be released on May 5, 2026.
Can You Watch Youjitsu Season 4 Without Watching the Rest?
Generally, it’s best to start a TV series from the beginning, and jumping in at season four is unusual. However, this new season acts as a fresh starting point within the larger story. The first few episodes both continue the existing plot and welcome new viewers. Important ideas are explained naturally through conversations, so newcomers can easily follow along. Even if they miss some minor details, they’ll quickly grasp the main story and be able to enjoy the drama and excitement.
Ayanokoji often reflects on how the changing relationships between characters are altering the strategies that worked for Class D last year. This helps new viewers grasp both the current events and what happened in earlier seasons. Ideally, watching the episodes while also revisiting previous seasons will give you the clearest understanding of everything.
How to Catch Up on Classroom of the Elite
If you want to get into the series, the best way is to start with the original books, but it’s a long commitment – there are now over 25 volumes! Luckily, Seven Seas publishes the series in the US, both digitally and in print. They’ve already released the first volume of Classroom of the Elite Year 3 as an ebook, and the print version will be available in May.
If you’re new to the anime and want to catch up with the story so far, you’ll need to read the first 14 published volumes, collectively known as Year 1. This includes the 11 volumes that contain the main storyline, plus three extra volumes – 4.5, 7.5, and 11.5.
If you want to get into the anime, the easiest way is to start with the earlier seasons, which you can find on Crunchyroll (and Netflix in some parts of Asia). Keep in mind that the anime does deviate from the original story and follows its own rules. Just be aware that Season 3 received a lot of criticism for its animation quality, so it might require some patience to get through.
What to Expect from Season 4
The fourth season of Classroom of the Elite will have 16 episodes in total. With the first four episodes already released, the season is expected to run for 12 weeks. Considering how quickly the story is moving and the season’s title (Classroom of the Elite Season 4: Second Year, First Term), it will probably cover content up to Volume 4.5 of the light novels, finishing before the School Sports Festival begins.
The animation quality this season is surprisingly good. Because the show relies more on building suspense than action, it doesn’t need the same level of detailed animation as something like Demon Slayer. While some moments still feel a little awkward, overall the animation has been solid so far. It looks like the series will keep up this quality and deliver a strong season.
You can now watch Classroom of the Elite Season 4 on Crunchyroll with subtitles in English and various other languages. An English dub is also planned and will be available soon.
