Zer0 is a hugely popular character in the Borderlands series, which is impressive considering how much fans love all the Vault Hunters. He became so well-liked in Borderlands 2 that his story continued in Borderlands 3, he appeared in the Tales games, and even featured in the limited-time test of Borderlands Mobile.
Surprisingly, Borderlands Mobile is a genuine game that was released unexpectedly, though it’s currently a limited-time test. It’s scheduled to be removed later this month, but early reactions from fans have been very positive. The game is still under development and its final name might not be Borderlands Mobile. While only one of the four planned Vault Hunters – the Summoner – is currently playable, fans are getting a good sense of what each character will offer. The Assassin Vault Hunter, in particular, feels like a mobile version of the popular character Zer0.
Zer0 vs. The New Borderlands Mobile Assassin
The character designs of the Assassin and Zer0 (also an Assassin class character) share a lot of visual similarities. Both feature a dark steel and black color scheme, with Zer0 using red for his mask and blue for his sword. The Assassin in Borderlands Mobile uses the same steel look and even incorporates Zer0’s blue sword color. In fact, the Borderlands Mobile Assassin could easily be presented as a new version of Zer0. Currently, however, they aren’t connected in that way.
The Assassin class in Borderlands Mobile and Zer0 from Borderlands 2 share a lot of similarities in how they play. Zer0’s Decepti0n ability lets him turn invisible, deploy a decoy, and then deliver a powerful sneak attack – a strategy that worked well with Borderlands 2‘s guns, especially for melee damage (boosting it by up to 650%). The Assassin in Borderlands Mobile, using the Slice and Dice skill, focuses on quickly defeating enemies up close with automatic movement and improved dodging. While they approach things differently, both classes essentially focus on taking down enemies – one through stealth, and the other through constant, rapid attacks.
Most Borderlands games feature a stealth-focused character, like Mordecai in the first game, Zane in Borderlands 3, and Rafa in the upcoming Borderlands 4. While these characters share some design similarities, the Assassin class in Borderlands Mobile (BLM) feels most like Zer0 from Borderlands 2. It’s clear this was intentional – the new Assassin is essentially a reimagining of Zer0, giving players a familiar yet updated experience.
The new character in Borderlands Mobile (hopefully they’ll reveal a name soon) shares a lot of similarities with Zer0, and it seems intentional rather than a coincidence. Each Borderlands game builds on previous ideas, and while this character currently feels very similar to Zer0, their design and abilities could change over time. It’s even possible they have a connection – perhaps this Assassin is a student of Zer0, like Ava was to Maya. For now, fans will have to wait and see. While this Mobile Assassin probably won’t have a major impact on the main Borderlands games, it would be more interesting if there was a clear reason for the similarities to Zer0.
