Anime Villains That Are More Iconic Than Frieza

Dragon Ball Z is widely considered one of the most influential anime series of the past 50 years. Adapted from Akira Toriyama’s popular manga, it significantly shaped the anime industry, and its compelling story, memorable characters, and exciting battles have inspired countless creators.

Frieza is a standout villain in the series. Like many of the enemies featured, he’s an alien with incredible power. What really sets him apart, though, is his memorable personality. While he’s a major villain, some others in anime are even more well-known.

Pain

  • Anime: Naruto

Naruto Uzumaki faced many enemies while protecting the Hidden Leaf Village, and Pain was one of the most challenging. Unlike other villains, Pain had a clear motivation: he believed that true world peace could only be achieved if everyone understood suffering. He wasn’t simply causing chaos; he was fighting for what he believed in.

Though Pain’s beliefs were extreme, many characters in Naruto ultimately showed that he had a point. Beyond his ideology, Pain was also immensely powerful – he single-handedly devastated a large part of the Hidden Leaf Village with one strike.

Sukuna

  • Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen

Sukuna is the main villain in Jujutsu Kaisen. He lived during the Heian period, a time when the art of jujutsu was incredibly powerful. Known as the “King of Curses,” Sukuna was infamous for killing countless people – likely hundreds or even thousands.

After a difficult battle, Sukuna was imprisoned, but he eventually resurfaced within the body of Itadori Yuji. Unlike many anime villains who show some compassion, Sukuna is utterly ruthless. He’s a devastatingly powerful killer, capable of destroying entire cities on his own, making him incredibly difficult to defeat. Because Jujutsu Kaisen is a newer anime, Sukuna resonates with modern audiences and has quickly become a very iconic character.

Itachi Uchiha

  • Anime: Naruto

Itachi Uchiha is often considered one of the most well-known anime antagonists ever. While he isn’t a typical villain, his choices throughout the story paint him as one. Whenever he appeared, he had a powerful presence that could intimidate anyone.

Griffith

  • Anime: Berserk

Griffith is the primary antagonist in Berserk. He originally led the Band of the Hawk to great success, earning the king’s favor. After Guts left the group, Griffith began to unravel and made a series of poor decisions, culminating in the tragic event known as the Eclipse, where many of his comrades perished.

Griffith is a cruel person who doesn’t care about the people who support him. He exploits them whenever it suits his needs and abandons them once they’ve served their purpose. Because he’s incredibly powerful, very few people pose a threat to him.

Dio Brando

  • Anime: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Dio Brando is a major villain in the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series, appearing not just in the first part but throughout the story. What makes Dio unique is the sheer intensity of his hatred. He spent years meticulously plotting against Jonathan Joestar, making his life miserable, and even went so far as to kill Jonathan’s dog, Danny.

Upon discovering Jonathan had a girlfriend, Dio impulsively stole her first kiss. He then escalated his villainy by murdering Jonathan’s father and attempting to take his wealth. Dio Brando continued this pattern, killing numerous people throughout his life. Beyond his cruelty, Dio’s distinctive personality contributes to his enduring popularity, making him a more memorable character than Frieza.

Yagami Light

  • Anime: Death Note

Light Yagami is one of the most famous characters in anime, known as the central figure in Death Note. The story follows his quest to punish criminals, but as he gains power, he becomes increasingly obsessed with control and ultimately becomes a power-hungry tyrant.

Light’s actions resulted in the deaths of both criminals and innocent people. He was a master planner, consistently devising complex schemes to eliminate those who opposed him. His strategies were often so clever that even the world’s best detective couldn’t see through them. Ultimately, Light was essential to the success of Death Note; no other character could have played the role as effectively.

Sosuke Aizen

  • Anime: Bleach

Sosuke Aizen is a character from the hugely popular anime Bleach. Many fans agree he’s an incredible villain who significantly improved the story. Initially, however, Aizen appeared as an ordinary character with no immediately noticeable characteristics.

Everything shifts when Aizen’s grand scheme is finally uncovered. He’d actually started planning things over a hundred years prior to the story’s beginning. His plan was almost perfect, and he likely would have succeeded if Ichigo hadn’t been so stubborn and impulsive.
