As a gamer, I’d say Far Cry is probably Ubisoft’s biggest franchise after Assassin’s Creed. It’s become their signature style of open-world gameplay. Since the mid-2000s, I’ve been dropped into some amazing places – from tropical islands to even Montana – with tons of weapons and a mission to take down bad guys, whether they’re dictators or cult leaders. Honestly, the formula started to feel a little familiar after a few games, but Far Cry has consistently delivered really solid first-person shooter experiences in open worlds.
The Far Cry series has changed a lot over time, and it’s often seen as a prime example of what defines Ubisoft’s open-world games. While not everyone agrees, each game in the series has its own unique appeal.

14. Far Cry Vengeance
Poor Performance Makes The Shooting Incredibly Frustrating
Far Cry Vengeance is a rare misstep in the series, a Wii remake of Far Cry Instincts: Evolution that doesn’t offer anything positive. It’s a completely unnecessary port and actually harms the reputation of the Far Cry franchise.
Fans generally dislike Far Cry Vengeance because of its performance problems, flawed artificial intelligence, and low-quality cutscenes. It’s a largely forgotten installment in the Far Cry series, and for good reason.
Should You Play Far Cry Vengeance In 2026?
No.
13. Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity
A 30-Minute VR Far Cry Experience That’s Quite Barebones
- Platform: Zero Latency VR venues
- Release Date: June 1, 2021
- Developers: Zero Latency, Ubisoft
Virtual reality gaming is incredibly popular now, and it’s amazing how accessible it’s become with home VR headsets. However, some VR games are best enjoyed in specially designed spaces. Zero Latency is a company that creates these immersive experiences, available only at their dedicated gaming centers.
Fans can try Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity, a roughly 30-minute VR game where players are captured by the villain Vaas on the Rook Islands and have to work with friends to escape. While it’s a shorter Far Cry experience, dedicated fans who enjoy Vaas’s captivating but disturbing personality will likely find Dive Into Insanity a fun and immersive half-hour VR adventure to play with others.
Most Far Cry fans won’t be able to play Dive Into Insanity because it’s only available at certain events. While it’s not a revolutionary experience, it’s an enjoyable little game for what it aims to do.
Should You Play Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity In 2026?
If you live near one of these places, it’s worth booking a session. You can find the locations here.
12. Far Cry New Dawn
A Colorful World And The Post-Apocalyptic Setting Are Not Fully Taken Advantage Of
Following the huge popularity of Far Cry 5, fans eagerly anticipated the next chapter in the series. Unfortunately, New Dawn disappointed many, diminishing the positive impact of Far Cry 5 and leaving some Ubisoft fans feeling let down.
While the post-apocalyptic setting of New Dawn following the nuclear blast in Far Cry 5 had potential, the game doesn’t fully capitalize on it. The story isn’t very strong, and New Dawn doesn’t introduce many new ideas after Far Cry 5‘s significant improvements. However, the core gameplay remains excellent, as it builds upon the solid foundation of its predecessor. The world has also received a vibrant visual update, and the co-op experience is enjoyable.
Should You Play Far Cry New Dawn In 2026?
If you enjoyed Far Cry 5, you’ll likely find more of what you’re looking for here. While the map isn’t very different or exciting, the game does have a brighter, more vibrant look. The core gameplay remains largely unchanged.
11. Far Cry Instincts: Evolution
A Stripped-Down Console Version Of Far Cry
The original Far Cry was enjoyable on consoles, despite needing some adjustments to run smoothly. Because it did so well, the developers decided to create a brand new game in the series that would only be available on consoles.
While not a major leap forward for the series, Far Cry Evolution is a solid game. The shooting and action are still enjoyable, and it’s a shame more people don’t recognize this often-overlooked entry in the Far Cry franchise.
Should You Play Far Cry Instincts: Evolution In 2026?
This game is decent if you’re a fan of similar titles like Far Cry Instincts or Predator, but it’s not essential playing.
10. Far Cry 6
The Most Disappointing Far Cry Game
Far Cry 6 has proven to be a particularly controversial installment in the Far Cry series, receiving more criticism than praise. While newcomers to the series might enjoy it, veteran players are more likely to notice how repetitive it feels. Surprisingly, despite adding more new features than Far Cry 4 and 5, the game doesn’t quite succeed. Many of these innovations either don’t make a significant impact or actually detract from the experience. For example, linking character skills to equipment instead of core stats feels frustrating and doesn’t make much sense.
The shooting itself is solid, typical of the Far Cry series. They’ve improved the ammo system, letting you switch types quickly without needing a workbench – but the fact that a workbench was ever necessary highlights how flawed the game was when it first came out. Combine that with a forgettable villain, uninteresting characters, and unchallenging enemies, and you end up with one of the weakest entries in the Far Cry franchise. Far Cry 7 really needs to address these issues if it ever gets made.
Should You Play Far Cry 6 In 2026?
You can often find this game for a low price, and it’s not a bad way to spend around 30 hours for $10. However, I still don’t really recommend Far Cry 6 because there are many other, better open-world games available.
9. Far Cry Instincts
A Console Version Of The First Far Cry Game That’s Commendable
The original Far Cry was a hit on PC, but players on consoles felt left out. To address this, Ubisoft created a console version of the game, aiming to keep the core experience intact while making a few necessary adjustments.
Although the console version, Far Cry: Instincts, offered a more straightforward experience, it was still an enjoyable way for players to experience the game. It was a bonus that it included features that hadn’t made it into the original release.
Should You Play Far Cry Instincts In 2026?
Very respectable console port, but there are better ways to experience the original Far Cry in 2026.
8. Far Cry Instincts: Predator
Compiles Far Cry: Instincts & Evolution Into A Neat Package For A New Console Generation
The first Far Cry games originally came out on Xbox. When the Xbox 360 was released, Ubisoft decided to update both Instincts and Evolution for the new console, combining them into a collection called Far Cry Instincts: Predator.
The updated graphics and smoother performance are great, making this the best way to experience both games. It might take some effort to get it running, but if you can get everything working, you can enjoy the original Far Cry with improved HD visuals.
Should You Play Far Cry Instincts: Predator In 2026?
If you’re playing on Xbox, this is the best version of Far Cry to get. Plus, it works on older Xbox One and newer Xbox Series X/S consoles.

7. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
A Colorful Romp That Pays Homage To The ’80s
Many fans consider Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon to be one of the best Far Cry expansions ever made. Its unique 1980s retro-future style and more lighthearted approach offer a welcome change from the typically serious tone of the Far Cry series.
One of the best things about Blood Dragon is how much fun it is, making it a great game for Far Cry fans. It delivers the classic Far Cry gameplay experience, but with a really cool and unique setting that people enjoy. It’s too bad it didn’t get a sequel, because many players would have loved to see more of what it started.
Should You Play Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon In 2026?
Even though it didn’t score very high, Blood Dragon is a game you absolutely shouldn’t miss – it’s better than several more highly-rated games. It’s quick and incredibly fun.
6. Far Cry
Kickstarted This Action-Packed Series With A Combination Of Stealth And Action
The original Far Cry shows its age quite a bit. One major issue is the incredibly long detection range of enemies, making stealth almost impossible. You’ll be spotted from ridiculously far away, ruining any attempt to sneak around enemy bases.
The combination of precise long-range enemies and overall challenging gameplay makes the original Far Cry a tough game. While it introduced some interesting concepts and laid the groundwork for future Far Cry games, it hasn’t aged particularly well and can be hard to enjoy today.
Should You Play Far Cry In 2026?
It’s tough to recommend Far Cry today, as it definitely shows its age. While it’s historically interesting and worth experiencing for what it was, you might not find it as fun to play now.
5. Far Cry 5
A Return To Form For Far Cry With Organic Exploration And Action-Packed Combat
Far Cry 5 is often a fantastic experience, and Hope County quickly became memorable for many players. While the game features familiar open-world elements, it’s the attention to detail and overall quality that really made Far Cry 5 so popular.
The Seed family are truly memorable villains – some of the best ever created in video games. Each member has a fascinatingly unsettling personality that makes them both easy to despise and compelling to listen to. Combined with enjoyable gameplay and a unique cast of antagonists, this helped solidify the game’s place in gaming history, despite its setting in Hope County being less visually striking than other games in the series.
Should You Play Far Cry 5 In 2026?
Yeah, Far Cry 5 is a blast.
