Metro Author Teases New Detail About Upcoming 2039 Game

Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the Metro series, promises the upcoming game will be the most intense and unsettling one yet. Fans have eagerly awaited a new installment in this post-apocalyptic shooting franchise, and it’s now confirmed to be in development. Those who enjoy the bleak and realistic atmosphere of Metro are in for something special.

After a recent leak hinted at its existence, Xbox has officially confirmed that Metro 2039 is in development and will be fully unveiled at the Xbox First Look event on April 16th. Developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver – the same team behind recent Metro games – details are currently scarce. The initial teaser promises an exploration of a post-apocalyptic Moscow, and the author of the original Metro novels has stated this installment will delve even deeper into the series’ world.

Metro Author Says 2039 Will Be the Darkest Metro Game Yet

Following the first glimpse of Metro 2039, the creator, Dmitry Glukhovsky, announced on Twitter that it would be significantly more grim and intense than previous installments. This claim aligns with the series’ history; the Metro games and novels, developed by a Ukrainian studio (4A Games), have always explored strong anti-war messages within a Russian context. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, beginning in 2014 and escalating in recent years, has deeply affected the series’ development. This influence has become even more pronounced, leading to an arrest warrant issued for Glukhovsky in Russia in 2022 after he publicly criticized the war and the government.

Given the changes in global politics since Metro Exodus came out in 2019, it’s not surprising the next Metro game, 2039, will be even more intense and realistic. 4A Games hinted at a darker direction before officially announcing it, and they’ve now confirmed the game will heavily focus on political themes, informed by the developers’ experiences with the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Moving beyond the original novel, Metro 2039 is drawing more inspiration from real-world events, aiming to deliver a more serious and gritty experience for fans.

Saying the next Metro game will be the darkest one yet is a bold claim, considering how intense the previous games have been. Metro Exodus already had a terrifying and immersive open world, so pushing that even further could be really exciting. However, without seeing any gameplay or learning specific details, it’s hard to know exactly what to expect. Describing something as “darker than anything you’ve seen” is also a matter of opinion, so whether Metro 2039 lives up to that promise will depend on each player’s experience.
