Controversial Light of Motiram Confirmed for PS5

Key Takeaways

  • Tencent has announced a PS5 version of Light of Motiram.
  • The upcoming game recently stirred some controversy for looking like a clone of Guerrilla Games’ Horizon franchise.
  • While Sony could theoretically refuse to sell Light of Motiram on the PS Store for any reason, the chances of that actually happening are currently unclear.

As a long-time fan of both Tencent and Guerrilla Games, I find myself torn between excitement and concern as I hear about the upcoming PS5 version of Light of Motiram. On one hand, I’m thrilled at the prospect of another beautiful open-world game to explore on my PlayStation 5. The screenshots and trailers show a visually stunning world filled with vibrant landscapes, intriguing characters, and towering machines reminiscent of Horizon’s robo-dinosaurs.

It was officially announced that there will be a PS5 adaptation of the game “Light of Motiram,” which recently found itself embroiled in a debate due to its resemblance to Sony’s “Horizon” series.

The “Light of Motiram” was publicly revealed on November 27 as the inaugural release from Tencent affiliate Polaris Quest. This announcement sparked interest, particularly among PlayStation enthusiasts, due to suspicions that the game seems to have borrowed heavily from the “Horizon” series. Specifically, its setting, overall aesthetic, and certain gameplay aspects appear strikingly similar to those in the “Horizon” franchise.

According to Gematsu’s observation, the game’s international trailer was accompanied by two announcements targeted at China, posted on BiliBili and Weibo. These announcements indicate that “Light of Motiram” is being developed for the PlayStation 5. The English-language reveal trailer, however, only mentioned the PC version of the game, which will be available on both the Epic Games Store and Steam. Additionally, mobile versions for Android and iOS devices are in development, but it’s uncertain if these will be released outside of Tencent’s home country.

PlayStation Store Could Theoretically Reject Light of Motiram

Although Light of Motiram appears to share similarities with the Horizon series, drawing inspiration from other works is not against the law. However, Sony may choose not to sell the upcoming game on the PlayStation Store for any reason they deem fit. At this point, it’s uncertain if they will indeed do so. In terms of gameplay, Light of Motiram differs from Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, as it focuses primarily on survival crafting rather than the action-adventure genre. Additionally, its business model will be distinct, with Tencent planning to distribute it as a live-service free-to-play game, generating revenue through various microtransactions.

Horizon Zero Dawn spoiler related to the game’s setting ahead.

Regarding character and setting designs, the game Light of Motiram bears a striking resemblance to a title from Guerrilla Games, such as the Horizon series. Additionally, the storyline seems heavily influenced by Guerrilla’s successful franchise, with the game’s Steam description revealing that Light of Motiram is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth, a surprising plot point also seen in Horizon Zero Dawn.

Polaris Quest’s first game is currently aiming for a 2025 launch. While some have raised questions about the strong similarity between its title, “Light of Motiram”, and “Horizon”, it’s worth noting that this mirrors Tencent’s strategy of dedicating a portion of their resources to capitalizing on popular gaming trends. Evidence of this approach can be seen in Tencent’s MMORPG, “Tarisland”, which seems inspired by “World of Warcraft”. Similarly, there’s “Auroria”, an upcoming sandbox game that appears to draw heavily from “Palworld”.
