As a gamer with a memory that stretches back to the dawn of the gaming era, I can confidently say that No Man’s Sky has been an extraordinary journey, one that mirrors the rollercoaster ride of our own lives. I remember the hype, the anticipation, and the subsequent disappointment when it was first released. But then, much like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Hello Games took the feedback to heart and transformed No Man’s Sky into something truly remarkable.
In an astounding turnaround, No Man’s Sky, which was once notorious for one of the most disastrous game launches, has now garnered almost unanimous praise after nearly a decade.
Hello Games’ independent title focused on exploration and survival, No Man’s Sky, now boasts a highly favorable “Very Positive” rating from nearly 250,000 reviews on Steam. Among the most current assessments, over 5,000 have been categorized as “Overwhelmingly Positive.
Back then at the 2013 VGX Awards, which is now known as The Game Awards, a game named No Man’s Sky was first introduced to the public. The initial trailer hinted at an expansive universe where everything from planets to landscapes were created using procedural generation. In other words, each planet would be distinct and unexplored by us.
2016 saw the launch of this game, but let me tell you, exploration wasn’t as engaging as I had hoped. Sure, technically, each planet was distinct, but there wasn’t usually much to discover or interact with on these planets. It doesn’t matter how unique a world is if it all starts looking and feeling the same, just with a different coat of paint.
How Hello Games Helped Turn No Man’s Sky Around
Instead of giving up, Hello Games dedicated themselves to enhancing the No Man’s Sky gameplay. Three months post-launch, they unveiled the “Foundation” Update, promising a significant transformation of the gaming experience. Among its many features, it introduced base-building, enabling players to feel as if they’re truly colonizing the planets they explore. This update was met with great acclaim, and Hello Games continued making improvements.
For the upcoming year, two additional versions will be rolled out: “Path Finder” and “Atlas Rises.” These post-release updates will incorporate new vehicles, a more engaging narrative (which was missing in the initial game), and other enhancements. In 2018, Hello Games introduced the “Next” update for the game No Man’s Sky.
It was evident at this stage: the previous two years resembled Early Access; what we were experiencing was the true version of No Man’s Sky that had always been intended. Stunning graphics, breathtaking landscapes, and a significant number of engaging activities for you and your companions to engage in – this was the game everyone anticipated when No Man’s Sky was initially unveiled in 2013.
