As a dedicated fan of horror manga and anime, I have had the chilling pleasure of immersing myself in the twisted world of Junji Ito for quite some time now. And let me tell you, no character has left me as petrified and intrigued as the enigmatic Fuchi.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the latest collaboration in Dead by Daylight, a game renowned for its horror-survival experience and iconic partnerships. From Freddy Krueger to Pyramid Head, we’ve seen characters from classic horror properties like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Silent Hill, and Dungeons & Dragons join the fray. Now, Dead by Daylight is teaming up with Junji Ito, a legendary manga artist in the horror genre, to introduce eight skins inspired by his chilling creations. Among these, Fuchi, a menacing villain with a taste for human flesh, will be available as a Legendary skin for The Artist. It’s going to be a terrifyingly thrilling addition to the game!

Fuchi’s Introduction: Rumors

Initially introduced in a short tale named “Rumors,” found in the 1997 anthology “Souichi’s Diary of Curses,” which revolves around Souichi Tsujii, a peculiar kid with an affinity for curses (set to be portrayed as a Trickster character in “Dead by Daylight”), Fuchi – occasionally referred to as Miss Fuchi – is the central figure. In this narrative, Souichi attempts to fabricate rumors about his wealth and fame, only for these tales to be exposed by his old affection, Midori. Subsequently, Souichi deceives Midori into thinking that she will acquire beauty if she were to bathe in a nearby marshland.

In an attempt to stir up a false tale about the swamp, Souichi locates images of a woman named Fuchi who has a chilling resemblance to a zombie and spreads the word that she supposedly bathed there and transformed into a beauty. Gullible Midori falls for this trick, allowing Souichi to secretly venture into the swamp to capture her image. However, Fuchi materializes, revealing herself as a grotesque monster with ferocious teeth, and attacks Souichi upon his attempt to photograph her. The story concludes mysteriously, but it’s implied that Souichi escapes, as he reappears in later stories.

Fuchi’s Story: Fashion Model

In the subsequent tale within the compilation, titled “Fashion Model,” we find Fuchi reprising her role as a professional model. Interestingly, Souichi is absent from this story, and it centers solely around Fuchi. She is even cast in an indie film produced by college students. However, there’s a twist: she mistakenly thinks that Iwasaki, the scriptwriter, finds her attractive, leading to an obsession with him.

In time, Fuchi develops a deep envy towards Tamae Mori, the stunning leading actress in the movie, and consumes her to seize the limelight. The production team is shocked and appalled by her behavior, and she continues to kill and devour them, sparing only Iwasaki. Similar to other tales penned by Junji Ito, Fashion Model concludes ambiguously, with Fuchi stating that she intends to “keep Iwasaki all to herself,” as the manga abruptly comes to an end.

Fuchi’s Other Appearances: Dead By Daylight And More

In another tale, titled “The Secret of the Haunted Mansion,” published in the 2002 collection “Voices in the Dark,” we find Fuchi once again. Here, Souichi and Fuchi are depicted as a married couple with a son, residing in a house known for its haunting presence. Interestingly, their son shares Fuchi’s distinctive sharp teeth and predatory eating habits. However, it is later disclosed that this story was merely a terrifying dream experienced by Souichi, likely stemming from his lingering fear of Fuchi, which he had encountered in the story “Rumors.

In the 2018 animated series “Junji Ito Collection,” I found myself captivated by the second episode’s adaptation of “Fashion Model.” It was there that Fuchi earned her chilling reputation, with her unsettling, grating cackle echoing as she attacked and consumed her victims. Regrettably, she did not make an appearance in “Junji Ito Maniac,” the second Netflix-aired anthology based on his works, which premiered in 2023.

In the game “Dead by Daylight,” The Artist’s character will don a legendary skin called Fuchi. This new look features Fuchi in a stylish fashion model outfit, complete with a pink dress and what appears to be the blood of her victims on her teeth and hands. She brings fresh voice lines, including her signature laugh, to the game. Standing tall with a twisted frame and a chilling grin, Fuchi promises to be a formidable adversary in “Dead by Daylight.
