The newly released mobile game, Borderlands Mobile, will temporarily shut down later this month. The developers plan to use this time to add more content and potentially release the game on platforms beyond iOS. While Borderlands Mobile already offers a lot to play, currently only one character, the Summoner, is available as a Vault Hunter.
Experienced Borderlands players will quickly understand these new characters and their abilities. The Summoner is a pet-focused class, similar to FL4K, and the Assassin is a straightforward, area-of-effect damage dealer like Zer0 from Borderlands 2. The Outrider uses throwing knives, reminding some of Vex’s powerful bleed build from the popular Borderlands 4. Finally, the Exo-Tank is a strong, durable character in the tradition of Brick and Amon, but its design and abilities also evoke Overwatch.
Borderlands Mobile’s Exo-Tank Has Clear Roots in Overwatch
The Exo-Tank is built for close-quarters combat, automatically defending against and reacting to enemy attacks. This design matches the character’s powerful appearance and perfectly complements their unique Action Skill, Shatterslam. When activated, Shatterslam allows the Exo-Tank to jump forward and slam into the ground, creating a shockwave that knocks down enemies in Borderlands Mobile. It’s currently unknown how this skill will interact with other characters in the game. This ability is excellent for controlling the battlefield and staying engaged in combat, and it will be exciting to see what strategies players develop around it.
While this ability works well, it’s not particularly unique. The Exo-Tank’s attack, Shatterslam, strongly resembles Reinhardt’s Ultimate ability from Overwatch, especially when combined with his Charge. Some might also see similarities to Hazard, but it’s best to see it in action first. Beyond that, the Exo-Tank and Domina share a very similar overall shape – it’s noticeably bulkier around the shoulders and extends down the torso in the same way. So, while the connection to Hazard is debatable, it’s clear the Exo-Tank draws inspiration from both Reinhardt and Domina.
Currently, Borderlands Mobile only lets you play as the Summoner, but it will be interesting to see how players react to the other characters once they’re released. The game might also change things up a bit before the full launch, potentially giving each character a proper name instead of just a class title. There’s also a chance the Exo-Tank will develop its own distinct style, rather than feeling like a mix of different things. Only time will tell what happens, though.

Generally, each character class in Borderlands Mobile feels like a more basic take on a familiar role – you’ve got classes built around pets, tanks, hunters, and assassins. Once the full game is released, it will be interesting to see if these classes develop more depth beyond these simple designs. If characters like the Exo-Tank and other Vault Hunters are improved and become more than just copies of existing ideas, the game could evolve from a simple spin-off into a worthy addition to the Borderlands series.
