The critically acclaimed film Godzilla Minus One, an Oscar winner and a standout in the long-running Godzilla franchise, is getting a sequel. Set two years after the events of the first film, which took place in a war-torn Japan, the new movie, Godzilla Minus Zero, sees Godzilla turning his attention to New York City and heading to the United States. GKIDS and TOHO are again collaborating on this latest installment.
The new Godzilla film, Godzilla Minus Zero, is set to release on November 3, 2026 – exactly 72 years after the original Godzilla premiered in Japan. For the first time ever, North American audiences won’t have to wait long to see it. Godzilla Minus Zero will hit US theaters just three days later, on November 6, 2026. This film is also a first for Japanese cinema, being the first live-action Japanese movie filmed specifically for IMAX, promising a spectacular experience for fans, as shown in the recent teaser.
Godzilla Minus Zero Brings the King of Destruction to America
Though the next Godzilla film might move the story to America, Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe will return as Kōichi Shikishima and Noriko Ōishi, the main characters from Godzilla Minus One. The previous film ended with Shikishima finding Noriko, who was injured by Godzilla’s G-Cells. Now, after a time jump, Noriko wears an eye patch, and Shikishima continues to deal with the trauma from their past experiences.
In regard to reprising his role, Kamiki shared,
I’m thrilled to be involved in a new film project, especially after working on Godzilla Minus One, which was a really significant experience for me. I’m also happy to be collaborating with Director Takashi Yamazaki and the entire team again. Like the last film, there’s a lot of pressure to deliver something that Godzilla fans will love, and I’ve given it my all to make sure everyone enjoys it.
Hamabe also stated,
I’m so happy to be part of the Godzilla Minus One world as Noriko, especially after being in the first film! I can’t wait to share this exciting moment with everyone and see Godzilla Minus Zero in theaters. It’s wonderful that the movie will be released in both Japan and the U.S. around the same time, so fans in both countries can experience Godzilla’s powerful return. I hope everyone loves it as much as we do!
The trailer for Godzilla Minus One reveals Godzilla causing widespread destruction in Japan, including attacking a ship and heading towards the United States. Meanwhile, pilot Shikishima fights to maintain control of his aircraft while flying through Godzilla’s powerful atomic breath. The trailer hints at “a new threat approaching” in the film.
Godzilla Minus Zero will release in theaters on November 6, 2026 in the United States.
