Anime often features characters who gain powers from the sun, but the moon is a surprisingly versatile and captivating source of strength as well. Many characters have demonstrated amazing abilities linked to the moon – some, like Sailor Moon, can create and control moonlight, while others, such as Carrot from One Piece, simply become more powerful when it’s out.
Freese the Seer
- Anime: Black Clover
Black Clover is a well-known action series that takes place in a magical world inspired by medieval times. Within this world, magic comes in many forms, and one unique type is called Moonlight Magic. This magic relies on a special book, called a grimoire, to harness and control the power of moonlight. Currently, only one person in the Black Clover series is known to wield this magic: Freese the Seer.
Freese isn’t a central character, but his unique abilities have impressed many Black Clover fans. Despite being unpopular, he powerfully demonstrated the potential of moonlight magic with techniques like Crescent Cut Full Moon and Bewitching Moonlight. This has led fans to hope that more characters with moonlight abilities will be introduced in the future.
Carrot
- Anime: One Piece
Carrot is a member of the Mink race in the world of One Piece. She’s become a very important character within the Minks, and has journeyed with the Straw Hat Pirates for a while, gaining a lot of popularity with fans.
Like all members of the Mink race, Carrot gains strength from moonlight. She was the first character in One Piece to demonstrate the Sulong transformation, which Minks undergo during a full moon. This transformation turns her white and significantly boosts her fighting ability.

Yue
- Anime: Cardcaptor Sakura
Around the early 2000s, Cardcaptor Sakura by CLAMP was a hugely popular shoujo anime, and it was hard for other series to compete. The show has a lot of memorable supporting characters, so it wasn’t a shock when Yue appeared with amazing powers connected to the moon. For a while, Yue was disguised as Yukito Tsukishiro, before his real role as a guardian of the Clow Cards—along with Cerberus—was revealed.
Yue’s name means “moon” in Chinese, and he’s a particularly well-known character in anime who wields lunar powers. He’s incredibly versatile, capable of both offense and defense – he can even create shields made of moonlight. Similar to other moon-based characters, Yue can harness moonlight as a weapon, demonstrated by his ability to form a bow from it.
Nekomamushi/Inuarashi
- Anime: One Piece
Similar to Carrot, Nekomamushi and Inuarashi are key figures within the Mink Tribe in One Piece. They’re considered the two most powerful Minks shown so far. Together, Nekomamushi and Inuarashi led the entire tribe, alternating duties to guard the island of Zou, which is located on the back of the giant elephant, Zunesha.
Throughout the One Piece series, certain characters possess exceptionally powerful Sulong transformations. During the Wano arc, they demonstrated the full extent of this power under the light of the full moon, transforming into Sulong and decisively defeating their enemies. Overcoming opponents like Jack and Perospero was a remarkable achievement, made possible by a significant boost in strength derived directly from the moon.
Hagoromo Otsutsuki
- Anime: Naruto
Hagoromo is a fascinating character from the Naruto series. As a member of the powerful Otsutsuki Clan, he’s one of the strongest characters in the entire franchise. Beyond simply using the moon’s power, Hagoromo, with his brother, actually created the moon itself within the Naruto story.
Hagoromo is incredibly powerful, and his connection to the moon allowed him to create one of the strongest seals in the entire Naruto series – the one that trapped his mother, Kaguya Otsutsuki. While not solely focused on lunar abilities, he demonstrated immense power by literally creating the moon using a massive Chibaku Tensei technique.
Kokushibo
- Anime: Demon Slayer
Kokushibo is a standout villain from the popular series Demon Slayer. He’s incredibly powerful, second only to Muzan, the Demon King. As Upper Rank One, Kokushibo achieved this high position through a combination of powers given to him by Muzan and his unique Moon Breathing technique.
Kokushibo stands out in Demon Slayer as the sole user of Moon Breathing, a technique directly inspired by his brother’s Sun Breathing. Unlike many other Breathing Styles which are deceptive, Moon Breathing is genuinely powerful. Kokushibo can create crescent moon-shaped slashes with his sword that are incredibly dangerous to his opponents. His epic fight is expected to be animated in the second Infinity Castle movie, where he’ll battle Gyomei, Sanemi, Muichiro, and Genya. He’s already proving to be one of the most compelling moon-themed characters in anime, and is poised to become a popular favorite.
Son Goku
- Anime: Dragon Ball
The series Dragon Ball is known for its characters gaining incredible strength, and one of the earliest and most unique power-ups comes from the moon. Saiyans, like Goku, have the ability to transform into a giant, powerful ape when they see the full moon. Goku, who landed on Earth as a child, used this ability several times. The only way to stop the transformation is to cut off his tail, which happens repeatedly throughout the story. This moon-based power remains one of the most distinctive abilities in the series.
Sailor Moon
- Anime: Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon, whose real name is Usagi Tsukino, is arguably the most famous character known for using moon-based powers. She’s the central character in her series and is actually the reborn Princess Serenity, the princess of the ancient Moon Kingdom known as the Silver Millennium.
The Sailor Scouts each draw their power from a different planet, but Usagi, also known as Sailor Moon, gets hers from the Moon – Earth’s satellite. Many of her attacks, like Moon Frisbee and Silver Moon Crystal Power Therapy Kiss, are based on lunar themes. Because of this, Sailor Moon is considered one of the most powerful characters not only in her series, but in anime as a whole.
