Lots of relaxing games work this way. Even when there’s a main story, it usually doesn’t feel rushed or press you to finish quickly, unlike in games like Stardew Valley. In Stardew Valley, I can play at my own pace without feeling like a deadline is looming or that I need to hurry and complete the storyline.

I really appreciate great sound in games, and Stardew Valley excels at it. The music and natural sounds are incredibly relaxing and play a huge role in creating the game’s peaceful and popular atmosphere.

Cozy games now heavily rely on sound design and calming music, proving that strong characters don’t always need spoken dialogue. Instead, it’s how sound and music are used that truly matters. For example, in Stardew Valley, details like the sound of leaves rustling, footsteps changing with the ground, and seasonal bird songs all contribute to a world that feels alive and immersive.

Stardew Valley doesn’t hold your hand. The game offers very few instructions or explanations, leaving you to discover things for yourself. There’s a brief tutorial for fishing, but otherwise, you’ll need to learn by doing. It can be challenging at times, but allowing players to learn and discover things themselves builds confidence and a sense of achievement. While some relaxing games offer more help than others—like Stardew Valley—they still recognize that it’s important for players to find their own solutions, such as discovering unique strategies for fighting enemies, as seen in Fields of Mistria.

Creating a cozy atmosphere through decorating is now a central feature in many relaxing games, regardless of whether they’re set in a forest, a town, or somewhere else. These games are also increasingly including features like farming and earning money, adding to the overall relaxing experience.

Stardew Valley lets you play at your own pace. You could get married and fully rebuild your farm and the town’s community center all within your first year, or you can take as much time as you like – or even ignore those goals completely. It’s up to you!

Many players appreciate this freedom in cozy games, where there’s usually no rush to complete quests. In fact, these games often skip timers on quest boards altogether, letting you play at your own speed.
