Windrose Naval Combat and Ship Customization Guide

Windrose offers both land and sea adventures, with battles happening in both environments. While sword fighting is straightforward, ship-to-ship combat is more complex. It can be challenging to outmaneuver opponents and fire cannons effectively, but practice makes perfect. If you’re finding naval battles in Windrose difficult, this tutorial will cover the basics and give you some helpful tips to win fights and conserve your resources.

How to Customize Your Ship in Windrose

Let’s start by looking at how you can customize your ship in Windrose. You’ll equip it with cannons to attack and braces to protect it. When you begin, you’ll only have simple 12-Pounder cannons and wooden hull bracing, but you’ll eventually be able to create more powerful versions of both.

To add cannons and bracings to your ship, you’ll first need to construct a Wharf in your base. Wharves must be built close to the water’s edge, and we suggest also building a pier to make shipbuilding easier. This will save you time running around your base. Once your Wharf is built, interact with it (or go to the Flagship tab in your Character menu) and place your cannons and bracings in the designated slots.

You can personalize your Flagship at Wharfs by changing its name, sails, and flag. Simply interact with a Wharf, click the ‘Manage’ button for the ship you want to modify, and then choose the ‘Customization‘ tab.

As a movie buff who loves a good pirate adventure, I’ve learned that if you want to customize your ship, you can buy blueprints – or ‘recipes’ as they call them – from folks in Tortuga and at the various faction bases. The Brethren of the Coast are the guys for ship stuff, seriously. They’ve got everything, even plans for bigger, better ships like Brigantines and Frigates. Just a heads-up, though, you’ll need to level up your workshop if you want to actually build the really cool upgrades.

Windrose Ship Combat Guide

Winning ship battles in Windrose depends on where you are, when you act, and how well you aim. Since you’ll often face more enemies than you can handle, mastering these skills is crucial for survival at sea.

Positioning

It’s best to avoid being surrounded by enemies. When fighting, constantly check your minimap to see where they are. Try to keep enemies on only one side of your ship. This makes it much harder for them to focus fire and overwhelm you.

Controlling your speed is crucial for staying in a good position. Slow down to three-quarters speed when turning, and use full speed when chasing or being chased. Only reduce your speed to one-quarter or half when finishing off a disabled ship, or when trying to maneuver behind an opponent that has just passed you.

Whenever possible, position your ship behind your opponent. Most ships aren’t heavily armed from the rear, and by facing them from behind, you can fire your weapons without taking much damage in return.

Timing

Okay, so a big part of doing well is understanding reload times. If someone hits me first, my instinct is to immediately get out of there and put some distance between us! But if I land the first shot, I try to stick close enough to keep firing, but I’m super careful not to swing around into the side of their ship where their cannons are already ready to go. I’m always watching those white bars in the middle of my screen – my cannon reload meters – and I make sure the enemy is in my sights as soon as they fill up so I can fire again right away.

In a fight, especially at sea, it’s crucial to strike first. Naval battles are often decided by who can disable the enemy ship before they are disabled themselves. Having superior weaponry greatly improves your chances of success.

Aiming

Missing with cannon fire can be costly, since cannons usually take around 11 seconds to reload. Generally, it’s better to aim a little low, because shots tend to fly over the target, potentially hitting the masts or sails, or missing completely.

If you want to slow down enemy ships, use chain shot ammunition to target their masts and sails. This type of ammo deals extra damage to those areas and applies a significant slowing effect.

When fighting at sea, focus on taking out the enemy’s weakest ships first – fewer guns firing at you means a better chance of survival. Also, be aware of the waves; high seas can completely block projectiles, stopping both your attacks and the enemy’s.

Boarding

I’m really excited about the boarding mechanic! If my ship has the right equipment, I can actually attach to an enemy vessel when they’re weakened and lead my crew in a full-on, on-foot fight. It’s awesome knowing I won’t be facing a ship full of pirates alone – my crew will be right there with me. Once we’ve taken down enough enemies, we’ll end the boarding action and claim victory!

Attacking an enemy ship is risky, and it’s particularly dangerous when boarding smaller vessels like Ketches. These ships offer little room to maneuver, and you can quickly become surrounded, even with allies. We suggest using ranged weapons and providing support from your own ship whenever possible, as long as you have sufficient ammunition and gunpowder.

If you reduce an enemy ship’s health enough to board it, the ship becomes disabled and can’t fight back. This is helpful when you’re facing multiple opponents or a ship that’s more powerful than yours.

Recovering Sunken Ships

You won’t win every battle, and if your main ship is destroyed, you can get it back when you return to your Wharf. Repairing your ship costs materials, and the amount needed depends on the ship’s size and type. Don’t worry, you won’t lose any cargo, but you’ll have to wait until your ship is repaired to access any loot you were storing on board.

If your ship is destroyed, immediately call for your sailboat and try to escape. If enemies pursue you, you’ll probably be destroyed, losing all the items and resources you’re carrying. You can recover these lost items by returning to the location where your ship sank, similar to how you retrieve items after dying on land.
