Key Takeaways
- Final Fantasy characters like Lulu & Relm need strategic use due to their weaknesses, relying on teamwork.
- Characters like Gau & Banon are powerful in stats an extreme amount of planning to be fully utilized.
- Cait Sith is divisive due to his unique abilities, like a one-hit KO attack that can harm the player’s party.
As a seasoned gamer who has seen the rise and fall of countless video game characters, I must say that the cast of Final Fantasy games is nothing short of extraordinary. However, there are some characters that, despite their unique abilities or charming personalities, seem to be held back by certain mechanical or narrative limitations.
As a gamer immersed in the vast universe of Final Fantasy, I must admit that, despite the game’s transformation from Tolkien-inspired medieval fantasy realms to contemporary sci-fi landscapes, and the ability to summon cosmic deities for battle mayhem, there are times when I find it challenging to keep certain characters on their feet.
The characters in the Final Fantasy series range from young individuals with magical abilities and ragtag resistance leaders to sly double-agents with Scottish accents, all relying heavily on the power of their companions rather than themselves.
1. Mustadio Bunansa
The Retreating Sharpshooter Who’s Under Attack By Black Mages
Regarding Final Fantasy: Tactics, despite venturing into the complex realm of tactical RPGs, it appears that Square, its developer, was dedicated to maintaining the storytelling aspects typical of Japanese RPGs within this spin-off game. Consequently, this isometric 2.5D PlayStation title presents players with an unusual challenge: making it seem effortless for a character to move around while still requiring significant skill to keep them from falling.
In the second chapter of the game, players encounter Machinist Mustadio Bunansa’s withdrawal from Baert Trading Company troops. Later, he will join your party, but at this juncture, you have the option to help him or stay out of his situation. If you decide to assist, you’ll face a series of random encounters with Black Mages who can severely harm Mustadio with just one attack. However, if you manage to protect him, the struggle through turn-based combat during the retreat could be justified due to the long-term increase in his Brave stat.
2. Relm Arrowny
A Powerful Pictomancer Who Acts As A Glass Cannon
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the remarkable skill set and endearing charm of Relm Arrowny, the Pictomancer from Final Fantasy 6, originating from the quaint hamlet of Thamasa on Crescent Island. However, her performance in combat is less than stellar due to some rather underwhelming stats, earning her the reputation as one of the game’s most fragile yet potent glass cannons.
In “Final Fantasy 6,” Relm’s abilities and stats are rather ordinary, and she doesn’t have a vast array of equipment. This might make it seem like her role in the team is at risk. However, with her unique ability to mimic enemy moves and then use them against the foes, Relm’s Pictomancer class becomes her key strength, offering a strategic advantage that other characters may not possess.
3. Lulu
A Character With Great Range Who Struggles Unless Under Strict Use
In a typical gameplay experience, Lulu from Final Fantasy X might find it challenging to stand out due to her consistent statistics. While some advanced players have discovered strategies to make use of her wide-ranging elemental abilities, Lulu’s inherent vulnerability tends to limit her effectiveness.
In the cast of characters from Final Fantasy X, Lulu isn’t particularly strong physically. She can be easily defeated if not carefully attended to. Moreover, her Overdrive ability requires a considerable amount of time to charge up before it can be unleashed, and when used, it is among the least powerful in Final Fantasy X.
4. Gau
The Feral Child Who Requires Methodical Planning To Be Utilized Correctly
Although the feral child Gau from Final Fantasy 6 is undeniably one of its strongest characters, his power is characterized by a need to refer to a guide to manage his complex abilities. Consequently, while dedicated players may invest time to optimize him, his strength can be overshadowed by a more obvious underlying weakness.
Orphaned following his mother’s demise and raised as a wild child amidst the Veldt, he eventually teams up with Sabin and Cyan, presenting an intriguing proposition of some Jerky. Despite his disheveled look, Gau’s “Rages” possess the potential to disrupt the equilibrium in Final Fantasy 6 due to their strength. However, before players can fully exploit Gau’s unique talent, they must initially discover these enemy-mimicked abilities by thoroughly exploring the Veldt.
5. Harley
King Edward’s Aide Whose Stats Aren’t As Prominent As Her Narrative
Harley, who abhors aggression and boasts a sharp mind, is exclusively featured in the 2008 pseudo-sequel of Final Fantasy 4, titled Final Fantasy 4: The After Years. Despite serving as secretary to King Edward of Damcyan, she was once Edward Chris von Muir, the playable crown prince in the original game. However, her stats find it challenging to stand out distinctly.
Regrettably, despite having a powerful personality, Harley’s weak stats and ordinary skills seem to undermine her standing. Her intellect, which is quite impressive in the story, is one of her defining traits, but it appears that even this trait pales in comparison to other characters from the Black Mage class.
6. Banon
The Returners’ Stoic Leader Who’s Hampered By A Lack Of Developer Oversight
Initially, new players of “Final Fantasy 6” might assume that Banon, who spearheads the “Returners” and sports a robust, bearded warrior image, is incredibly strong. However, upon closer inspection, his imposing figure conceals mediocre stats, low MP, and an unusually restricted arsenal of weapons.
Regardless of his powerful storyline and engaging appearance, Banon’s main stats are remarkably weak. Additionally, the temporary character you can control, who stirs up trouble, has minimal physical strength and no MP (Magic Points) to use. These statistical weaknesses are further exacerbated by the fact that Banon always carries the “Punisher” rod, a weapon that draws on its wielder’s MP to deal critical blows. However, because Banon doesn’t have any MP, this weapon is essentially useless to him.
7. Rydia
A Magical Powerhouse Who Is Fragile In Her Younger Years
In the game “Final Fantasy 4”, Rydia, with her distinctive green hair, stands out as one of the game’s most iconic characters due to her diverse party role. While her Summoner abilities make her a formidable character within the game’s lineup, it is not until she undergoes an unusual aging process in the realm of Feymarch that she truly becomes a powerful force.
In essence, though she is an indispensable member of our group despite being young, her delicate condition limits her influence within the party, which was sadly cut short. In the game Final Fantasy 4, her youthful character mirrors this, as her stats are initially weak, but later in the story, it appears she undergoes a transformation that boosts her abilities.
8. Cait Sith
The Divisive Creature With A One-Hit KO Attack That Can Hit Himself
In the world of gaming, a character’s popularity often doesn’t directly correlate with their in-game strength or weakness. However, the enigmatic feline villain from Final Fantasy 7 appears to have struck a delicate balance between being controversial from a narrative and mechanical perspective. Although Cait Sith may not boast an exceptional statistical profile, his distinctive casino-themed abilities might just be what sets him apart from other characters.
In “Final Fantasy 7,” Cait Sith’s attack, ‘Slots,’ which deals a massive amount of damage when circumstances align favorably, justifies his presence in the player’s main combat team, albeit with limited justification overall. However, it’s important to note that the potential for Slots to deal damage back to the player increases the risk of a complete party knockout.
